Baby elephant Joe nuzzles his dead mother

There are concerns for the health of an orphaned baby elephant who is feared to be dying of a broken heart.

Borneo pygmy calf Joe is losing weight fast and experts say it will be a "challenging task" to keep him alive as he is only consuming half the milk he should be, AFP reports.

Three-month-old Joe is being cared for by keepers at Malaysia's Gunung Rara Forest Reserve after 14 rare Borneo pygmy elephants were found dead of suspected poisoning.

"There are a number of oil palm plantations in the area where the pygmy elephants were found dead and these elephants do cause a lot of damage and one of the plantations might have wanted to get rid of them."

Harris, whose longtime family friend Jubrille Jordan, 15, was fatally shot at the site Sunday afternoon, was awash in tears as he surveyed the makeshift memorial.

"She was my sweetheart. They killed my sweetheart," said Harris, a neatly dressed man in his 50s, as he wiped his eyes. "What happened? I don't know, I don't know."

Jubrille was Oakland's 12th child killed in 2012, and its 131st homicide victim in one of the city's deadliest years in recent memory.

It happened on a sunny afternoon on a relatively quiet street, while Jubrille was standing with friends and a baby. The group was on the sidewalk on Lion Way near 66th Avenue - a quiet complex of townhouses and community gardens- when another group approached and started firing just after 3:30 p.m.

The baby, a friend's, was unharmed, but a 14-year-old boy in the group was struck in the foot, and Jubrille died at the scene, police said. She was apparently not the intended target, friends and family said.
