Do you consider the portrayal of the female characters in the media you let your children watch? And if so in what manner? And what about male characters?

I don't put a lot of thought into it.

eg my kids have seen a lot of the older Disney flicks with the helpless female leads just as they've seen the ones with the independent/capable female leads.

I generally only restrict sex and violence; more so the violence.

eg my daughter loves anime, but I screen a lot of what she wants to watch. See watched 2-3 Samurai Champloo before I had her stop.

That seems fair, Samurai Champloo is pretty violent. Good though. Have you looked into Miyazaki movies for her? They are fantastic, and have great, positive portrayals of women as well. My absolute favourite is Kiki's Delivery Service, it's probably in my top 5 movies all time.

To be fair, Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast have fantastic female characters.

I'd count those all as newer though.

Really??!

Well 101 Dalmatians does too haermm
What would you consider older then?

B & B is from 1991, that's 23 years old mate.

She's seen and loves Ponyo, My Friend Totoro and Spirited Away for sure. I'll look into getting more of his flicks for her. Thanks.

I thought about showing her Princess Mononoke, but iirc, that was fairly violent?

I haven't seen that yet, sadly, I should get to watching all his work.

Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Bambi, etc. Hmm, I guess I consider from The Little Mermaid on more modern.

Yes; own it.

The Lion King might be my favorite Disney animated flick.

I prefer Pixar as well. Except for Lilo and Stitch. I think I put Lilo and Stitch at the top out of both Disney and Pixar. Then Wall-E

It's definitely up there.

My favourite Pixar is Up.

Up is fantastic; the intro scene makes my eyes water a bit.

Putting Pixar films in order, is literally my favourite past time, so, of the ones I have seen, currently:

Wall-E
Up
The Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Toy Story
A Bug's Life
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 2
Ratatouille
Brave
Cars
Cars 2

It upsets me that Ratatouille is so low, that's my second favourite after Up. His lust for life strikes a chord with me haha
