The story ends with a reveal that an expedition in the days of discovery disturbed some religious grounds in the Arctic and awoke animal gods (Pagan reference?)

The very end of the story has the last remaining humans living out their days on some farm while the half breeds take over completely, with Sweet Tooth being a pro "let them die out peacefully", while opposed by a "slaughter them all" sect.

So what is the metaphor here?
