In order to leave our system we desperately need cold fusion engines, but that's not happening any time soon.

How do you know?

Because right now there's no accepted scientific model for cold fusion, scientists & engineers have been fooling around with direct fusion engines but nothing smaller than a building, and in space you really need to limit weight and bulk or you're never getting it in orbit. And the minor little obstacle of there not being enough palladium on the entire planet to achieve cold fusion so ...kind of a non starter.
