I once out of boredom translated out that entire song off the top of my head.

i once out of boredom wrote down the recipe and actually went to the store to get the ingredients. instead i just got a 12 pack and a pizza.

No, you're becoming quite baffled. The music isn't equally good. Lyrics are secondary in Tool, regardless of how excellent they are.

The reason Tool are as great as they are is the music and Maynard's vocals. Words and what he is saying don't ever mean as much.

He's quite possibly the best lyricist ever, but it's the music first.

Ive thought about this a bit and Ive actually come to believe that the best part of Tool is the way they make the lyrics and the music work together so perfectly. Neither one is better imo becuase the beauty is teh way they support eachother

Yeah but that's still wrong. Because the words Maynard writes on a piece of paper aren't equally as important as the MUSIC the three other members make.

That's how it is.

You might find it incredible the way both areas (musical/lyrical) are incredible and that's fine. I agree. To say that words are as important as the music is just disrespectful.

Im not saying the words are as important as the music. Im saying all of the band members is evenly skilled (as far as I can tell) and they all combine to create something good. Im saying take out 1 person, and the song will be way worse, no matter which person it is

I agree, I class vocals as an instrument. What the voice is saying doesn't matter though.

They're not all evenly skilled though. Maynard isn't as skilled as Danny, for example.

It all depends on what you look for in your music. Who's to say which part of the song is more important than another part?

The fact that it's music, not spoken word, maybe?

Music is more important in music, than words. Bookal closeage.

It's not an instrumental though, so obviously the words are important to the band, or else they wouldn't be there. I doubt they are just there so the singer has something to sing.

There's three instrument players to one vocalist. The words he writes don't mean more than the music. That's where the emotion is.

Not the words. The words only become powerful when he uses his voice. Without him, they're nothing. Even then, it's the sound of the voice that matters, not what it's saying. The lyrics are amazing and yes, they do add to the songs, but they're not equal.

Well I disagree, I think his lyrics would be plenty powerful on black and white, they don't require him singing them to make them emotional at all, although the vocals do add to the emotion. Thats why I say it depends on what aspects of the song you value more. Personally I value lyricism more than vocals.

Well regardless of how powerful you view them, they're not more important than music, in music. Because...it's music.
