Tool

Actually I am a big fan of Jello Biaffra and a lot of people can't stand his voice 😑
Maynard has excellent force behind his voice, it's just his tone. I can't listen to two albums back to back otherwise it grates on me. Actually, with the exception of Hetfield, I probably would say the others are whiney which probably explains why I only own one or two albums of Soundgarden and Led Zep. I could reel off a few rock bands with boss sounding lead singers, but you know it's in the eye of the beholder now that you mention it.
I guess what annoys me is how he always bags religion. Yeah I know he has his reasons but it's really (for me) starting to get a bit old. I thought APC would be a new outlet for him to diversify but I don't see it. It's really Tool's music that stops them getting tedious and stuck in a rut like so many other metal bands. I got the same feeling when I picked up Slipknot's Iowa. I guess I shouldn't use Tool as my punching bag cos there are a lot worse bands, I was just keeping on topic 😄
I'm starting to get a bit cold with the state of metal at the moment. I need something new.

He doesn't "bag" religion, as you put it, he talks about the way people interpret it wrongly and let it control him. I used to think the same, until I listened to his commentary on "Judith" on the APC DVD.

In case you don't know, Judith is probably the most "anti-religious" song he's done—saying things like "**** your god" and etc. On the commentary he explains that he doesn't mean literally "**** god," he means "**** YOUR god." He's talking about the ridiculous ways people take a good thing and twist it around to take a completely different meaning out of it. He goes on to tell a story about how his middle-aged mother (whose name was Judith) was hospitalized for a serious illness. Coming from a Southern Baptist family, she was very steadfast in her religious beliefs, and people around her were always complimenting her on her strong faith, but behind her back they'd talk about her in a totally different light. I'm sure I won't change your mind, I just had to mention that he's really not anti-religion, more anti-organised religion.

Two other things: APC are totally different from Tool, including Maynard's vocal style and his lyrics. And please, please don't mention Slipknot in the same statement as tool.

^VERY interesting

To me he is just a whiney little kid with an axe to grind who uses big terms to pass himself off as a psuedo-intellectual. I'm sorry but just because you read books on philosophy and stuff it doesn't make you Plato. He's got so much talent and power in his voice he just wastes it on petty bitching. It's a shame really.

[Sarcasm]Hahahaha.

Yeah coz we all know how every singer in the world has the intelligence to talk about the ascention of Saturn and it's effect, jungian theories, purging self of the anima and continued evolution through psychedelia, to name a few minor minor things.

But then maybe I'm missing the point.
[/sarcasm]

If you think Maynard has shit lyrics, you have no intelligence. Simple.

That's not pretentious, elitist or stuck-up. It happens to be true. He talks about things that you can't just understand unless you already A) Have an active interest or B) Have an open-mind enough to gain an active interest.

To paraphrase a critic:

Tool are the band that should be beamed across the universe to show aliens that despite mounting evidence for the contrary, there are intelligent musicians on this planet.

I'm tired of the fact that people call them overrated just coz there are alot of fans here. They deserve every accolade and piece of praise they get. I'm not asking you to agree, but have some respect. You do, so I won't harp on you. Just have a little more respect for Maynard.

WTF 😠 Are you joking? omg..you better be joking...Maynard is the reason tool is tool..with his bitchin voice...i cant sing like that, its just so perfect..Tool is tool because of him, and danny carey, and adam jones.....and whoever else...dear lord...he doesnt try to pass himself of as a "psuedo-intellectual", he IS..hes a genius to incorporate shit like: evolution, religion, ect. Into his songs

so therefore...CHOKE ON THOSE WORDS 😠

You think Robert Plant is whiney? Good god. I'm guessing you're one of those people who thinks every vocalist who doesn't growl or scream is a wimp. Either that or you have a slight hearing problem.

Seriously, I can at least see why people may think Keenan or Cornell are whiney (not that it's true), but Plant? He's the friggin godfather of all modern rock vocals.

I was listening to Tool while I was still in High School some ten years ago and I thought the same about him back then. Nothing changes.

Well, people do generally evolve ideas post-high school, actually.

I love Tool. Excellent musicianship. I really like Lateralus more than their other albums, though.

meatwad meatwad says: Tool is da shiz niz

i'll be honest, my mates put tool on for me... and i didnt like them. i said what makes you so connected to their music? and they said that you need to be on drugs to hear it... doesnt this mean that they are indeed overrated if u need to be off it to like them?

Not really, because (a) that would be an achievement in itself, and (b) it isn't true.

Meatwad has some mad tastes. 😉

Anyone hear anything about the new album lately?

no news on a new album but a Lateralus Vinyl is coming out august 26th. 4 LP Pic Disc.

Yep, I heard about that on another forum that I go on.

In relation to the above guy's post.

If your friend just "put Tool on" for you, you didn't experience them to the degree you need to, in order to appreciate them.

As for the new album, don't expect to hear anything groundbreaking until A) Tool choose to tell, which they won't. Being that it's a more secretive recording process than ever before, and B) The record is nearing release.
