ok, RC, I was reading your instructions, and I have a question.
Am I supposed to turn off the old computer, and boot it up with this new floppy Win 98 universal boot disk?
ok, I'll start from scratch. I'm logging off the old comp now.
------------
gahhhhhh. that didn't work. got a "nonsystems disk" message.
I'll bring the floppy back here to unzip.
sheesh. ok. finally got it unzipped on this computer onto a floppy. Now, I'll go back to the old comp and try again.
well, Ush, you folks know what you're doing. When you give me instructions, you hafta realize you're pretty much talking to the light pole in front of your house.
I had also downloaded RC's file to the floppy disk, so when I stuck it in the old comp and tried to boot up, it didn't work.
Then I brought it back here and tried to unzip it, and ran out of room on the floppy, so had to erase all data on the floppy, and go to RC's file I had saved to my hard drive. Then, opened it up, THEN, unzipping it to the floppy disk. Then it did unzip.
OK, I'm off to see the wizard in the old comp now. Be back in a few.
*SIGH*
I still get the message, non-system disk, on the old computer.
WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I checked the floppy on this computer, and it looks like everything unzipped ok.
When I used it as a systems disk on the old computer, it didn't work, said it was a non-systems disk.
ok, RC, get out your magic box and find another magic potion.
Well, I was following RC's instructions on booting up, but it doesn't work.
Before I jumped out the window, I went rummaging through all my old disks and found the original boot up disk the system tells you to make when you first start the computer. It worked as far as getting me to Drive A, like the first set of instructions from RC.
But I can't get it to go to Drive D or Drive E. I think my cd drive is E.
I'm going to boot it up again and see which file is missing; the error message shows up each time I boot up. I'll write it down this time.
Sorry, Keo. From here it is just too difficult to tell what is wrong. I am not sure why RC's disk does not work and I thinm it would take too long to explain how to get the cd-drive working over the forum... maybe RC can help more when he gets back.
BTW, the cd drive letter in DOS will be whatever the start-up files tell it to be.
ok, here's the error message I get when I boot up.
ERROR STARTING PROGRAM ERROR MESSAGE
The SUBS30.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880
Thanks, Ush. I'll just continue to move my fav websites over here until RC can think up another fix for me.
RC, as you think up fixes, please post here, and when I get home at night I'll try it, and post my results here, until we get this problem worked out.
Thanks again, everyone, for al your help and support. We shall overcome the monster. 😄
Ush, I tried D: E: F: none worked. I'll check again.
Ush, I checked, looked at my explorer. my cd drive is D.
Well, if the drivers aren't therem it won;t be any letter.
The only other (relatively) uncomplictaed thing I can think of is to back up any copies of config.sys and autoexec, bat that are on the old computer, then copy over the config.sys and autoexec.bat files from RC's disk onto the old computer (overwriting the files you have now backed up).
Copy all the other files from the disk onto the c drive as well, remove the floppy, then when you re-start the computer it should load as if RC's disk was working, from the hard drive.
If it doesn;t work out simply overwrite the config and autoexec files you copied over with the backups wou made.
Of course, I guess you would rather wait for RC.
At this point, I'm afraid to do anything. So, since I have lotz of web sites to send to this computer, I'll be working on this project until we can figure out how to fix it.
There's just so much everyday stuff that I want to take off, like my computer password, since I use it in my other personal access stuff, so don't want to leave that, plus other thingys to preserve our identity and privacy.
Ush, I have WinME on this computer. But I'll try RC's boot disk here to check it out.
RC, USH, IT WORKED FINALLY
The first time I made the boot disk, I just used a fresh disk. This time I formatted it on this computer, WinME, then downloaded your win 98 universal boot disk on it, and tried it on this computer, and it worked, just like your directions.
Then I did it on the old computer and it worked.
OK, now, it got me to the DIR listing in D drive (cd drive). Does this mean that after I've reformatted the hard drive, this will work?
OK, if it does work, when I get to this point, what command do I do next to download Win95 on it.
YIPPPEEEEE, IT FINALLY WORKED. THANK YOU, RC. YOU'RE THE MAN TODAY. *GIVES RC A HIGH FIVE*
Oh that's great Keo, I'm glad everything worked out for you. I've been paying close attention to this thread, sitting on the edge of my seat. The drama, the excitement, the tension, when you stated that you received The SUBS30.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880, error message, I was about to abandon all hope! But RC and Ush came through! That's great, This has been one heck of a roller coaster ride!😂 Your carpooling friends daughter better treat your computer as if it were a gift from the pope, with all the turmoil you went through 😄 If I ever have a computer related question I'm going straight to Ush and RC!🙂
