you gotta be honest though man--rap wasnt NEARLY as popular in the late 80s/early 90s as it is now. Yeah, it was on mtv (sometimes), but alternative and grunge was the mainstream sound then, whereas rap is the mainstream sound now.and while i would agree that mainstream rap sucked a few years ago, there are too many great producers out there now to say it sucks. Pete Rock, Timbo, Premier, Pharell, Dre--each of them have done tracks for "mainstream" artists getting "mainstream" radio play.
when 50 was doing mixtapes people were lovin not hating. When he first got on with Em/Dre, people werent hating either. But now that he's dropped two platinum albums and making a movie, people are hating.
just cause it's popular doesnt make it bad.

i know right. I mean, I like that song that Nas made with his dad. You see when I listen to rap I only care about the beats and flows. I dont give a shit about the lyrics. So yea I liked the sound of it.

Common's great.. Nas is boring these days.
This time last year, I would've agreed, but I thought Street's Disciple was a huge step back in the right direction for him. And after getting The Lost Tapes, I won't hear a bad word against Nas. He may have made some bad career choices, but he's a truly awesome lyricist.
