Cyclops / Scott Summers

I'm actually a longtime fan of Scott and Jean as a couple, although I do see the potential for Scott and Emma to last. The whole Scott/Jean thing took a real beating during Morrisson's run. We're talking about three years worth of Cyclops being miserable, coming right on the heels of his being dead for a while. Oddly enough, the conflict between the two of them during this time is part of the reason I always liked them as a couple. Neither one of them is perfect and they've both made their share of mistakes in dealing with the other, but it was always clear (to me) that they loved one another, even when Morrisson was tearing them apart. Which is why I'm baffled by the tendency in certain subsections of the xmen fandom to lay the collapse of that relationship entirely at Scott's feet.

I've actually been involved in "discussions" with people who think of Jean as a victim of Scott and Emma during Morrisson's run, in spite of the fact that she threw herself at Logan in this very run, long before Scott even glanced in Emma's direction. The only difference between Scott and Jean's actions during this time is that Logan turned Jean away, and Emma did no such thing with Scott, and yet some of the fans act as if Jean took some sort of moral high ground. Wow. This turned into a rant, and I really didn't intend it to be. This is just something about the xmen fandom that's been driving me nuts lately, and I needed to get it off my chest.

I'm one of Scott's biggest critics when it comes to his morality. I've learned from the past, so I'm not going to ruin this thread again with a "discussion" about who honked who the worst in the Scott vs. Jean situation. However, I'll be more than happy to explain to you why I think he's such a bastard in private. Send me a private message if you really want to do this. Your call.

Nah, believe me, I'm about as eager to go down that road as you seem to be. Which is to say, not at all. I was just venting. In some corners of the web, all you have to do is mention the names Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, or Emma and then you can imagine how quickly the topic degrades into a discussion of the triangle, regardless of what was originally being discussed. I'd much rather talk about what's going on in the books right now, or at least what's on the horizon. The delays on Astonishing, coupled with the fact that the last few issues have been relatively uneventful, don't really leave room for much discussion unless we talk about where Joss Whedon is going with the character. And it seems that whenever he makes an appearance in another x-book, Emma's usually there with him, and the focus is on her, so he doesn't even get to say much. That said, does anyone think we'll get another character issue like Astonishing #14 anytime soon, or one where we get to see Scott and Emma actually talk about what happened in that issue?

i think whedon will give scott alot more in the coming issues, he has to after what he did with the character... stuff needs to be resolved, and we need to see scott being as badass as we know he's capable of...

I certainly hope so. This may seem a little bit backwards, but everytime a new issue comes out, I get just a little bit more annoyed with the delays and the bi-monthly schedule. You know, as opposed to just being grateful that I finally have the issue in my hands.

i get a mix of both... until i read it, i'm just finally glad to have an issue in my hands...

* i have a question: the Scott Summers we're dealing with, who does't have any powers, does it only occur in the arc? or is Cyclops really powerless in the Marvel continuity storyline? how about the Civil War? and how about Scott being one of Hulk's several A-Hit List (on http://www.ign.com/)? thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

astonishing is set after or before civil war (though i'd say after), so its in general continuity that he's powerless... unless of course he gets his powers back by the end of this arc, then it'd be rather forgettable...

either way though, i hope he doesn't go anywhere near the hulk...

I think AXM Torn/Unstoppable is set after the Endangered Species Crossover which is set after WWH.

that's a fair way off isn't it? though given whedon and cassaday's delays, i'm not so sure its not warranted...

IIRC Whedons going to fix this continuity stuff at the end of the unstoppable arc since he's such a continuity freak. Not sure where I read that though.

then why the big hoopla with cyclops? he must have pretty major shit planned for the next few issues...

Well one of them is supposed to bite the dust. The entire AXM team is appearing in the X-over...so Whedon has to have major plans.

i should bloody hope so... things, as good as they are, have been a bit on the slow side imo... the last issue seemed rather fleeting...

* another thing, is it true that Cyclops & Havok are not immune to Vulcan's powers? if so, it will contradict the fact that he is their brother... or is it because Vulcan is an omega-level? ???

I don't think all mutant siblings are immune to each other's powers, even in the same family. There doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules where that's concerned, except that if two mutants are unaffected by each other's powers, they're probably related or soon to be revealed as such. There was a nod to this in the 90's animated series, where Havok made a cameo, and his powers didn't work on Cyclops. They didn't reveal that he was Scott's brother, but people who read the comics could see what they were alluding to. I think Vulcan's an energy manipulator, so it's likely that he was simply able to turn their own powers against them.

* Cyclops is one of them...

* is Cyke still alive?

Maybe. I think Emma was rather unconvincing while she pretended Cyclops was dead. The whole scene was rather rushed also (1-2 panels).

In my opinion she is pretending he's dead to throw Danger off guard, remember, Danger knows how the X-Men fight, so the only way to beat Danger is to use unconventional methods.

But I guess we'll just have to wait untill AXM22 for confirmation.

Was I the only one amused by how emo he was in the 3rd movie?
