Looking closer it may be that he tore of the branch and then made it grow. Because as psycho gundam points out there's a branch missing under the bed.

If you tear off a branch of a tree and plant it then it may grow roots. Perhaps that's what Obito was doing, manipulating the root-growing effect?

nah man, it's wobbling from side to side but making a "wood" sound as it shakes cause it's presumably dry

if it grew from his hand i think kishimoto would have drawn it upside down to signify growth

It was a joke.

A torn off branch can set roots, meaning that it's possible for it to grow upwards.

It's pretty evident what Obito is doing. He tore of branches and made them grow as part of his training. This because he was infused with the organic matter from the tree containing Hashirama's cells.

I think the translators got the sfx wrong tbh. The stump is cracked at the top, and it is thickest there. If it were growing from his hand, it'd be thickest at the bottom.

So yeah, PG's prolly right.
