At least unlike Bleach's deicide, stuff is happening. The situation is very different than a year ago.

Well Tobi was revealed a year ago right, since then he was betrayed by Madara, Madara took over and started raping. It honestly doesn't feel like that much has happened over a year. Then again, I did play catchup from the beginning of the war, so it just felt like things were moving at a comically slow pace.

Here is what happened in the last year since the Obito reveal:

We found out exactly what happened to Obito after Kakashi left him and why he fell to the dark side.

We found out what happened to Madara after his fight with Hashirama (because the rumor was Madara never died but lived on).

We found how how Madara was able to keep himself alive.

We got to see how Hashirama defeated Madara.

We got to see where the Rinnigan eyes came from and it was revealed how they came to be.

We got to see who was in that coffin that Kabuto was threatening Tobi/Obito with.

We found out that Gaara's mom actually loved him and so did his mentor (despite what his mentor did). Basically, we got closure to Gaara's entire story.

Neji was killed.

We found out how Rin died.

Naruto finally mastered his biju.

Naruto mastered all the biju.

Naruto became the most adapt chakra controller in the story, that we know of (the great sage may be better...who knows).

We found out that the Great Sage's mother was the one that started all this shit (why is this not one of the most interesting reveals?).

The old Hokage's were revived and we finally got the whole backstory to Konoha's creation.

We got Madara's backstory.

We got the whole truth to Itachi's backstory.

Sasuke finally got some closure from Itachi (one of the most important plot pieces in the manga). Sasuke is now one of the good guys...we think.

The moon's eye plan was fully revealed and almost happened (we didn't know exactly how it would happen).

The 10-tails was finally reborn and we saw pretty much all of its tricks.

Kakashi and Tobi got closure to their whole ordeal and Tobi tried to redeem himself before Kishimoto decided to cruelly rip that atonement away from Tobi.

And now we know that the plan, the whole time, was to revive Madara (into flesh form) and Madara executes the Moon's Eye plan.

Tons of shit happened. Tons. In fact, more of the story/plot was revealed and resolved in this last year than any previous year. This has been one of the most "revealy" and plot tie-up years in Naruto's history.

To be fair, things "have happened" in Bleach, too.

The question is whether the things that "have happened" are... interesting, and fresh, and don't feel like the filler of a man desperately trying to stretch out the source of much of his income.

That's where peoples' opinions branch off, obviously.

edit- There's no point in getting annoyed about any aspect of a story, Q. It's not your story, you're not getting paid or fired or affected in any way based upon the quality of the story- you're just reading it. For free, in our cases.

BUT, since this is a discussion board...

I think it's within my rights to complain about how tired of a trope it is at this point in the story for us to be left with someone "dead" as a cliff-hanger, knowing full well that some deuce ex machina will be introduced in a following chapter to explain why he's still alive. Why even bother doing it? It's like a magician performing the same trick over and over again even though he's already explained to you how it works.

Looky what got animated.

Indeed. It 'feels' a bit slow because it's been happening interspaced with what is, effectively, one fight, but there's so much stuff in between that fight.

There's also Sakura's power up that happened in that time, and Orochimaru apparently siding with the good guys, and etc..

Still, people have invested time into the story, I think getting annoyed at a story for doing something badly is reasonable.

It's more when people get annoyed that it doesn't suddenly change genre tracks this late in the game that gets an eye-roll from me.

I don't think the current problems with the manga can be attributed to its genre.

Really wishing the good guys would stop being dumb and help.

What happened to the 5 Kage, Sarutobi, the Samurai, Darui, Sakura and all the others again? They were with the Bijuu when they got pulled out of Obito, but now they're nowhere to be seen.

C told a bunch of fodder to run away, but it's not like they'd do much against a dude who can knock the Bijuu onto their asses just by staring at them.

The manga really should be read Tankōbon to Tankōbon. vin

They're doing what Unohana did against Aizen. Another reason I'm annoyed. Tobirama attacking was good because at least someone was trying but why oh why did he try it alone? At least bring Sarutobi.

Now the real question is whatever happened to Spiral Zetsu. Sincerely hoping he is alive and on Obito's side.

What's most likely going to happen is the other S-classes are going to step in to buy time for Naruto and Sasuke to recover.

This is mainly directed at the "I hate it if Sasuke doesn't die here," comments, which would be very out-of-genre, and wouldn't make much sense with the nearby capabilities.

Lots of things were revealed but I'm talking more forward progression. Naruto is the kind of manga that could honestly reveal new things til the sun comes up, but without that significant forward story progression, it feels like wheels are being spun a little.

Wow, most of those reveals were sh_t that I didn't really care about. For real, I think that the story would've been as good -or better- without spelling most of that stuff to us.

I guess Kishi is not fond of leaving things untold so they still have some mystery to them.

Major forward story progress, there's Naruto getting full power, connecting with the biju, Obito claiming the Biju, Sasuke switching sides, Obito being defeated, and Madara stepping forth.

They might be important plot points, but they didn't really advance the plot that much. Other mangas could've done all that in about six issues.

what was that about the Great Sages mum?

👆 This is exactly what I'm getting at

Alternatively the reason Kishimoto has allowed the manga to not progress the plot as much as you'd like is because he wants the reader to, like the characters, feel like this is the longest night of their lives since it is pretty much the most important battle in Naruto. Best way to do that is to spend 100+ chapters on the fight with breaks sprinkled in so that time can actually progress in universe.

I mean compare it to the Aizen battle. Aizen took proportionally less time to defeat in terms of chapter length than Obito(and by that I mean when the two entered the fighting themselves) by quite a lot but I will never reread that fight because it really does take too long without giving any payoff. The battle takes place within a couple hours, tops, and yet it feels like forever since there are so many chapters. The fight in universe doesn't take all that much time really but to the readers it feels like an eternity, creating a dissonance that makes you not like it. The Obito/Madara fight could potentially feel that way but time is clearly passing(day changes to night, characters show signs of weariness, people move from place to place).

Chap is out.

Spoiler:
So Spiral Zetsu is back and has been keeping the Shinobi Alliance busy with Mokuton. Holy **** this guy really is a good fighter. He's using Hashirama's really strong techniques.

Hinata proves that walking is more difficult than you'd think.

Sasuke and Naruto are both at death's door. Sakura is trying to help. The SA seems to be relying heavily on Sarutobi since he has unlimited chakra and really can use all 5 elements like a Rinnegan user. He really is a genius.

Right now I'm genuinely curious what will happen. The SA doesn't seem to stand a chance. This was a legitimately good chapter that I only have one real complaint with.

Sasuke

Spoiler:
needs to die faster
.

Ok Chapter, at least we saw the Shinobi Alliance

Spoiler:
fail hard at life

We saw Sarutobi do something impressive! He really can do all five elements, and did big jutsu of each.

I think his prime form can now be assumed to be full-S safely.

Though I think its pretty cool, exactly where did Spiral Zetsu come from?

Also its pretty much confirmed that. Naruto and Sasuke are going to somehow survive this so I'm not too worried I'm more concerned with Bee killing over and nobody giving a damn.
