Well it was dumbly established that the Edo Tensei can be released if they get too emotional. For Minato it was parting with his son, for Hiruzen it was seeing the next generation of the Sanin standing strong before him, and for Hashirama it was absolution with his pal Madara and a hope that the future of the village was in good hands.
Tobirama is not emotionally invested in any of this but he did create the jutsu so maybe he can just dismiss himself like that.

The sage guy summoned Kages of the OTHER villages that he was sending back but the shortness of the ones summoned by Orochimaru were being sent back because of Madara's death, for no reason at all other than that the author forgot that Orochimaru had summoned them, not Madara. It makes clear that there is abruptness in the time they had left that is directly related. Do you not think that the sage guy saw that Naruto only had a little bit of time to talk to his dad for the last time he would not wait a little or that they maybe needed some time to deal with Sauske? Its just a plot error that is inconsistent that made me laugh. Don't try to reason with it I just wanted to point it out lol.
Wait didn't Hashirama already break the Edo contract with Orochimaru? So while all the others being sent back by Hagoromo would be plausible, wouldn't Hashirama still be stuck since his contract was already broken? Unless Aura's take is correct an everyone really did go the Sasori route.
On a side note I can't tell if Ninja afterlife would be really cool or really lame. On one hand everybody gets to gono matter how badly they messed up. On the other hand there doesn't appear to be any context as to what's there other than souls.

The Sage can bring souls back from the afterlife. It makes sense that he can send them back, even if they are bound by Edo Tensei.
I never said he couldn't. I am saying that if you look at what he says and what occurs it is implied that Madara's death is what caused the 4 leaf hokage to go away because his summons was fading and that the sage was making sure his summons stopped. If the summoner dies the edo tensei cannot be stopped. And I am just making fun of the inconsistancy because Madara didn't use edo tensei at all. It was Orochimaru who summoned them.
This is not an inconsistency or a plot error. Hagoromo outright states that he will send both the dead Kages and the Edo Tensei Hokages back to the pure world. Immediately after hearing this statement, Naruto runs towards Minato because he realizes that Hagoromo was sending his father back.
How are you getting that Madara's death caused their summoning to be over? The two events just happened to occur close to each other. srug
That is why I made the statement in the first place because it makes no sense why it would happen at the same time and so quickly it seems like his death is implying that his summons, which isn't his, was about to fade which breaks the edo tensei rules and the fact that he didn't summon them but is in a plot event it seems that all of them disappear at once but makes no sense why. The sage seems to be more concerned with making sure that Madara's death didn't make it so the edo tensei goes unbroken which implies that Madara summoned them. There are two inconsistencies in a sense. If Orochimaru wanted to he could just resummon them which he probably will.
Yes, there was a plot event that caused the Kages to all disappear at the same time. Kishi needed to make Sasuke's plans known.
Madara's death did not end the Edo Tensei, nor would it have ended the Edo Tensei. Hagoromo ended Edo Tensei. This is stated outright. He ended Edo Tensei and his summoning of the Kages because his own time was up.
There is no inconsistency.
