We've also seen the Sound mook outfit, the one that the ninja who attacked Shikamaru and were punked by Asuma. It's different than the mook army's.

If the Sound 4 were supposed to be exceptional sound ninjas, apart of the same unit as Kimmimaro, then that doesn't bode well for the rest of the no-name sound ninjas. The ones they fought were special Jonin, and they did manage to do so without injury and fairly quickly which is kinda impressive.

The two did have names too, even if they don't come up much. Raido, the scarred one, was also the guy who stabbed Kakuzu in the face after Asuma died and helped drive them off.

I would say the four were chunin in skill + jonin-level chakra from the seal, judging from that and their performance against the retrieval squad.

Aside from them, you have Kimimaro, Kabuto, Juugo, sorta-Sasuke, plus Suigetsu mentioned there were several other strong ninja like him wanting to off Orochimaru though it's hard to tell if they were prisoners like him or more like Sasuke in serving willingly. Those're the exceptional ones, the S4 seemed noteworthy mostly in their unity as a group for stuff like the force field jutsu and ability to take the cursed seals.

While clearly not in the level of the big village's, Orochimaru's willingness to do all kinds of experiments as well as attract some followers based on his personal rep, Sound wasn't that bad off.

Still, while he hates them he does believe they're very strong (in part because he knew his own strength, and meeting Madara would only reinforce that), and grew up in their culture.

They viewed the Senju as equals, and when they joined Konoha (not defeated but just in a perpetual stalemate, and with Hashirama getting the Hokageship just because he was the one who offered peace) figured it'd be a partnership, but then felt they were unfairly not given their rightful respect via politics in the intervening years.

The Senju at some point in the intervening years having apparently broken up or something too, we've seen no sign of an existing Senju clan organization.

So the only clan proven able to stalemate them is no longer in a position as rivals, thus logically making them the best, and they've view themselves as losing position not due to any loss of strength but purely politics.

Arrogance and great power typically go hand in hand. The dissolution of the Senju clan only helped strengthen their arrogance.
Plus, they are the descendants of the Older Brother, who probably thought his power was greater than his brother's, and therefore felt that he should have been the Sage's successor.

It's like a clan of Sasuke's. Won't actually ****ing acknowledge they have rivals to their power or doujutsu. Until they get beat down and owned, they think their the top of the food chain.

It's ironic Itachi is the only credible and stronger Uchiha member and he's betrayed them all. Kishi's playing favorites with the older bro IMO.

Ironically were it not for the whole rebellion and such, Itachi probably would've made a great Hokage, an Uchiha that those who followed the way of the Senju would've liked.

Sasuke is one of Kishimoto's favorite characters and his favorite character to draw...

Rock Lee is his favorite character to draw. Sasuke is actually one of his most difficult charactrs to draw.

He said as much in an interview.

Sasuke is indeed the most difficult for Kishi to draw.

But over time he became his favorite.

He also views Sasuke as the "ideal rival," he certainly does not hate him.

Editors make sure he gets Sasuke right but still despite putting effort in Sasuke it doesn't mean he likes his character, especially compared to Naruto and Shikamaru.

You know, a lot of them could be genin level 🙂

Kishimoto is trying to make Sasuke as strong as he is is old, just a kid being blessed with potential that isn't unlocked yet and making him humble enough for any experienced ninja to fight him and school him in some aspects so that he can grow further and close the gap.

I think it's making him look like a pussy IMO.

Maybe. Could also be between Genin-Chuunin. Genins don't use swords though, so I doubt they'd be Genin in actual rank mmm

Leaf don't have the genin use swords, but that may not be universal. It might be they're from some organization that doesn't give as much customization and has all it's ninja use swords.
