Piercing through people is merely an ability of being a sharp stabbing sword, in the same way Zabuza's blade can slice off heads due to being a large cleaver. Likewise sewing them together is a result of the thread.

It didn't look to have a chakra ability like the bolt ones.

The Hammer-Axe sword seems meh though. Looks like it was designed for sword to sword combat.

Or possibly beating foes with armor.

it could be a puppetry/nature infusion type deal

A thread which he would likely be able to produce by himself, or from the sword. I'm guessing the thread is as much a part of the sword, as those explosive tags are a part of the Blast Sword.

Probably. But Ringo's Fang could likely do that as well.

'Having a hammer' and 'having a string' aren't exactly awe-inspiring special abilities either 🙂
The having a string in a bit more awe-inspiring when it stitches people together. Though yea the giant hammer not so much but a bit more shocking when in a sword fight you get hit with a giant hammer when you were about to block a sword.

Pft, Zabuza is the only one who doesn't need any big ability for his sword. Those big abilities are crutches Zabuza did not require. estahuh
Well duh. That's why he is so awesome. 😛

The string doesn't impress me so much because while it's shocking, you can only pull it off if you've already stabbed someone through. Though come to think of it, it can be used to throw the stabbed at their comrades and otherwise control the battlefield... still, minor bonus after you've already done an impaling blow.

are we to assume that the blast sword makes it's own explosive tags?

also wouldn't it be cool if they tracked down the blacksmith who made all these swords? 🙂

Or has a large reserve or way to easily summon more.

I'm guessing they don't share the same maker. They might've been custom made for the original 7 (or possibly when one is destroyed, a new replacement is made. Or one of the swordsmen might discard a blade in favor of a new, better sword).

Considering Fuguki was called the "original wielder" of Samehada, they probably weren't all made at the same time.

The episode with nara clan getting slaughtered by oro was a filler episode where he made a beast human form chemical. Which that dude i think mizuke was his name from the beginning of the series tried to still a secret scroll and had naruto steal it for him.

what's your point?

Ah, the Mizuki the Tiger story.

I don't... really count that as official, it's pretty lousy even for filler 🙂

I thought it was funny that Gai knew who Zabuza was but he could remember Kisame even after fighting him. I guess Zabuza had a pretty fearsome reputation.

Seeing Zabuza again makes me kind of ticked off because it reminds me that in 520+ chapters he has been the only real ninja, everyone else is a combat wizard masquerading as a ninja. Everyone in Naruto should be masters of silent killing techniques, the are freaking ninja! But Zabuza throws up a mist cloud and everyone is pissing themselves.

Still Zabuza was and remains the best and most badass character in Naruto, so it is nice to see him in action again... particularly since he is causing more trouble than the resurrected members of Akatsuki. 😎

He had no doubt heard of Kisame, but the first time he fought him he was staring at feet due to worries about sharingan remember 🙂

And he was never formally introduced to Kisame by name either.

I just wanna mention, the "ninja have magic powers" thing is decades old in Japan, the US tends to focus more on purely the assassin part.

As for other assassin types, Sai's pretty good in that respect too. He'll kill people in their sleep with ink snakes given the chance.

That said, I too like how the reaction is, "Crap! Mist cloud + Zabuza, everyone huddle together!"

The guy's terrifying 🙂

Oh, something I just realized: This is how he killed the entire graduating class, isn't it?

Can you imagine an entire group of genin-levels (maybe some better, a lot possibly worse) having to deal with an even less refined version of this?

Maybe but that "ninja magic" was basically limited to A) disappearing B) bunshin C) body swapping and D) shadow melding / manip. Now they just stand in the open and cast spells.

The whole manga should have been like the first Kakashi vs Zabuza fight with all the misdirection and subtelety.

couldn't agree with you more

i especially hate how many upgrades the sharingan gets, i liked how it just copied movements and the genjutsu was ok too, but now it summons demons with flaming arrows?!?

No way, I've seen clips of ninja from live-action shows/movies made decades ago doing all kinds of weird things, like attacking with a cloud of bubbles that I think ate the target's soul.. it was kinda confusing to be honest.

There were NES games where ninja threw fireballs and such.

The manga Flame of Recca from '95 had ninja use magic powers as a major focus too (largely via items in that case), and it wasn't unusual in that respect at the time, I believe.

It's often not as much as Naruto, but ninja as combat wizards who use misdirection in their fighting but still more or less stand in the open and throw 'spells' at each other is part of what being a ninja is in Japan.

The assassin bit is there too and there's been plenty of more mundane ninja, but people underestimate how long magic has been a part of ninja mythos.

They do often use tricks, decoys, and such in most fights. Naruto vs Neji had him faking defeat. Shikamaru vs Tayuya involved two indirect abilities clashing and so on.

The Hidan vs Shikamaru and Asuma fights were pretty good in this regard. Although Naruto is all about the flashy mystic arts such as Sussano and Izanagi.

Zabuza still kinda lost due to the almighty Sharingan. In his defense however: Mist jutsu>>>>>Sharingan vision.

srank is right; a lot of ninja in naruto are just people with powers.

for example, tamari is not a ninja at all, she's basically a blond version of that chick in inuyasha that keeps annoying the shit out of him with wind attacks every chapter

Spoiler:
some flashbacks happen, and kakashi subdues haku and zabuza with the help of that cloth guy.

gaara fights the second kazakage who was that guy kabuto summoned that lookes like a mumy. his special ability is being invisible, and he's impressed that gaara even knew he was there

Spoiler:
Not a Tsuchikage? That's a surprise.

Sand really does have the greatest reason to hate Akatsuki.

Spoiler:
He's a Kazekage?

Dude doesn't look like either the first or second Kazekage.
