Here's my thing with MMOs:
First off, I don't hate them. But I've always considered them a slightly "lesser" form of game. I play a lot of RPGs, and have dabbled with friends' accounts numerous times on various MMOs, dating all the way back to the first Everquest (actually, dating back to text-based online MUDs back in the day, but I digress).
They always seem like they're not as good a product as top-tier traditional RPGs that come out at the same time. They sacrifice gameplay quality for human interaction. I'll concede that if you use the interactivity well, it can be a transcendent experience because it involves more complicated objectives and quests when you have multiple humans. But there has never seemed like there's enough of that for me to justify purchasing one. Any time I see one, there's a bunch of people solo-questing 90% of the time, and occasionally doing something sweet. But instead of an all-around polished product, the 90% is kinda lame.
Maybe I'm wrong. And the fact that legit gamers that I know play and enjoy WoW might mean they finally caught up with single-player gaming experience and quality. But I remain skeptical.
Still, looks like I'm buying it. Guess I get to find out.
WoW had to many nut jobs for me. You know the ones; who took the game WAY to seriously. Like that fat guy from South Park.
I'll give you an example:
I'm doing a quest to go into some mines (I was a human (paladin)) and I kept getting killed by the creatures. So I figured I would ask someone to go with me (I was around lv.10-12 so I was looking for someone around that level). I ran into a girl (well the character was a girl) about my same level and she agrees to help me with the quest. We go to the mines and we get the quest completed (fetch quest).
I finish up, I thank her, I log her. The next day I log back in just to play the game; she finds me in that little village place calling me her boyfriend...and I was at that point in WTF mode.

Its sad to say, but for the most part thats pretty true. I think what really gets everyone into WoW is just to run through the amazing environments, be part of an incredible story and be able to chat with a bunch of other players while doing it. (wow that sounded lamer than I thought it would)
The gameplay, well it isn't really that good to be oh so honest. Eventually at the higher levels it gets better just because the action is faster paced and you get to look at all of the cool moves and spells.
But in any case, you will love this game. I garauntee it

Most of us have had one of those moments. When I was maybe 10 and got my first computer, I talked with some girl a couple times in a chat room and referred to her as a gf (though I didn't really broadcast it) and someone did it to me in a MUD a long time ago and I had pretty much the same reaction.
I wouldn't call it crazy people though. She was probably in her low teens and had never teamed with anyone before.

That....er, was basically saying it's a mediocre game, then guaranteeing satisfaction. You don't happen to sell cars, do you?
😛
Wow is very solo friendly.
Most of the stuff I do I'm do completely alone and love it. It's a myth that you can't do stuff alone in the game, you can do most everything by yourself.
And as far as annoying other players go, they're easy enough to ignore. If you just don't respond they'll usually shut up. If not, you can put them on ignore. Really, most people in the game that I've met have been fine.
Anyways, Digi, I'd suggest you try the demo from the website. Think there's a 10 day trial pass that you can use. If you decide to buy the game afterwards and continue playing you can continue using the same character.
Also, Digi, to your concern about lack of plot, Wow has some quest chains that have some really good backstories. The game is very very high quality for an MMO as far as the storylines. I think you may be surprised. Unfortunately many people simply don't read the quest story and just go "kill 10 bears" part of it, but they often have a neat story to go with them and usually lead to some pretty solid finale.

Noted.
As I said initially, it's peer pressure more than genuine interest that will likely get me into this. But words like yours help reassure me that I'm not sinking 40 bucks for nothing on the Battle Chest (gonna do it right if I do it, so screw the basic-only version).
But maybe I'll try the demo. Sounds like a nice service. Thanks.

The quest lines to open Black Temple lead to some crazy story intertwines.
It happened. My sister bought WoW for me (expansion too).
I'll be installing it tomorrow. After some consulting with friends and thought, I'll probably be going with Blood Elf - Hunter for my main, though I'll need to make an Alt on a different server to throw my sister a bone. Everyone I know rolls Horde, though, so I haven't even looked at the Alliance races/classes.
If anyone plays on the Anderhaul server, throw me a PM...I can annoy you for better gear or something.
313
Longest. Installation. Evar! 1 game, 1 expansion, about 4 patches, and maybe 2 hours later, and I'm upset.
Oh, and it's Anderhal, Andorhal, or something similar...spelled it wrong earlier. Not that it matters. There's a billion servers and seemingly not a ton of KMC interest. I just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone was still questing and such. Those "Noez Wai!!!" moments are priceless.
Anyway, I'm level 2, and won't be announcing further levels up. I spent most of my first session tweaking the controls, the product of which was an entirely random moonwalk-session around town as I tried to feel comfortable with them, oblivious to what my avatar was actually doing in the game world.
I play on the Destromath server with a bunch of people. If you get sick of your hunter then come by and say hi. My name is Dethros - 70 undead rogue.
Why did you choose a Blood Elf for your hunter? Just so you know, Orc is the best race for hunter on the horde, big time. Their racials are excellent for the class. But a lot of people don't like how they look, so to each their own. Have fun!

Hunter is much more my play style than anything else. I lean toward bows/projectiles in most RPGs anyway, and enjoy having a familiar. I did as much research as possible, but didn't know Orcs were better Hunters than Elves. Though I do prefer a more elegant look. "Orc Smash!" isn't really my idiom, either with play style or with looks. My character is actually a chick ( uhuh ).
Anyway, I might stop by at some point. As it is, I'll likely have to make a temp on my sister's server anyway.

That's cool. Hunter is a solid class for many things. They're great for playing by yourself. My friend has a 70 Hunter and he PVP's, and one on one he rips most shit apart, he can do crazy damage.
The only thing that keeps me from really considering a hunter is the pet. They seem like an annoyance.
If you plan on doing arena at end game though, Hunter is pretty lousy in there. Just an fyi.

Pets handle the close combat while I rain destruction with my bow. Works fairly well, but I realize there's also a downside to most classes. I'm going toward the marksmanship (destruction) skill tree first, so I should be fairly powerful eventually. And from a role-playing aspect, I've always enjoyed the animal sidekick idea....maybe it's my love of Drizzt Do'Urden, but I've always enjoyed having help like that. Heck, I downloaded a pet shop mod for Oblivion and may not have beaten the game without my panther....or at least not nearly as soon. Kid saved me from more than one situation that I would've died in otherwise.
Why do they suck in the arena? Can they use pets there? I'm not too concerned, since I'll enjoy the Hunter regardless. But thanks for the tip.
....
Also, for anyone, do we know what the most/least popular races and classes are? Does Blizzard release that information, does it even out mostly, or don't we know?
