That makes sense I guess. I would've been a gnome if my friends were Alliance though.

Pets handle the close combat while I rain destruction with my bow. Works fairly well, but I realize there's also a downside to most classes. I'm going toward the marksmanship (destruction) skill tree first, so I should be fairly powerful eventually. And from a role-playing aspect, I've always enjoyed the animal sidekick idea....maybe it's my love of Drizzt Do'Urden, but I've always enjoyed having help like that. Heck, I downloaded a pet shop mod for Oblivion and may not have beaten the game without my panther....or at least not nearly as soon. Kid saved me from more than one situation that I would've died in otherwise.

Why do they suck in the arena? Can they use pets there? I'm not too concerned, since I'll enjoy the Hunter regardless. But thanks for the tip.

....

Also, for anyone, do we know what the most/least popular races and classes are? Does Blizzard release that information, does it even out mostly, or don't we know?

Yeah, they use pets in arena. Pets really aren't all that useful, especially if you go Marksman, your pet is little more than a nuisance to your enemy. If you want your pet to be a beast, consider beast mastery.

They're bad in arena because they lack any real defense, they can't get away from things really. Also everything they do requires 'line of site', and there are pillars in arena that people hide behind, so they're easy to negate. They also lack crowd control. I'm aware that I may be talking over your head, especially since you are very new to the game. They do extraordinary damage, though. If you don't care about arena then you should be quite fine.

And you're right, all classes have weaknesses. But most are very good at certain things while liking at others, and hunter's just happen to lack in arena. They're great in battlegrounds and in PVE instances.

And, as far as most popular/least popular Blizzard doesn't release this kinda information. But there are third party sources that try and find out this information, here is one - http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php

I'm familiar with the terms. I did my homework prior to joining and have friends who are into it. Thanks though. I can see how they'd be less effective from that description.

Beast Mastery is going to be my secondary skill tree. Marksmanship is 1st, but my pet(s) won't be a pushover by the time I'm fully leveled up.

this site gives some decent arena advice

I'm going to be using the disc build on my priest when he hits 70

Well, if you go MM your pet will be a pushover at 70. That's just how it is. MM pets can be killed in about 4 hits from any damage dealing class. There's no way around this as MM. Your pet won't do much damage, and he'll be able to be killed very quickly. It will basically be there to just interrupt spell casters. Even with some points in BM it will still be pretty weak, the only way to make it a real beast is to go deep BM.

Thanks for all the fun links guys. Census stuff, arena advice, etc. All useful and/or interesting.

I'm switching over from MM, since you're not the only one who has recommended BM to me. Only 15 points in MM before I switched, so I can put 45 in BM. Should be plenty to go as deep as I want to. I already have most of the offensive talent points that I want, so it's not a big deal.

I suck hard at PvP right now. But my buddy (who's many levels ahead of me) is constantly stunned at how much I can handle in instances for my level, due to my pet's aggro (and ability to take punishment like a champ) as well as competent use of all my powers. Seems to be pretty much to form for this class: Hunters...weak for PvP, good for soloing and group work.

Gettin' towards lv. 30. Close to a goddamn mount. Only major gripe thus far is that there's WAY too much down time from walking, even with flight paths and such. My ability to run slightly faster doesn't do much to help. The mount will help.

I wouldnt go that far... it depends on what you mean by pvp..

1v1 they're good.. not the best but good (right now rogues are still cheap whores)

usually its 5v5 that noone bothers taking a hunter.. not because they suck, but simply because theres better options

spec'ing BM really makes a HUGE difference in dominating at pvp.. specially if you get a scorpid pet.. that nature DoT pwnz

I have a bat and a bear currently. The bat's been with me for a while, but once I find a suitable pet at or above maybe level 40, I'll be trading him out. I'll look into a scorpid class though.

lovely site about hunter pets

Cool. What a useful site.

Actually, MM hunters are fairly popular in 5v5 arena. Mostly because of their ridiculous spike damage. And silencing shot is nice too.

...which is encouraging. Now if I actually had skillz. ermm

But Hunter's solo like champs. I just took out a lvl 36 (I'm 30) with resurrection sickness (forget I had it), and have defeated multiple Elites at once who are above my level (though just barely). A friend of mine refused to believe it when I told him. He's a much higher lvl than me but needs to stay closer to his lvl to survive.

Alliance are b*tches, btw. In my experience, at least. I realize there may be less to do after a while at 70, but is corpse-camping level 20-somethings really fun for anyone over the age of, say, 12? They're not even in zones where they have stuff to do. It's fun out-smarting them though and escaping/killing them (with larger groups, of course), which is entirely possible. But still annoying when there's so many of them.

The people who corpse camp low levels tend to do it because they are lousy and can't really compete with people of their own level.

So instead of being a level 30 without enough money for a mount, I'm only going to play about a half hour a day for a couple weeks, and will work the auction house while I'm on. At my current pace, I hope to be at about 100 gold with 14 days (up from an initial 10-15). Then when I begin questing in earnest again, I'll have my mount.

It'll be a dumb purple Chocobo from Silvermoon, but it beats no mount.

They lowered the price of mounts when they lowered the level required, I think they only cost like 40g now.

35g for lvl 30s ( PSH )

& hey now. I'm an alli, and quite clearly I pwn.

😉

really? I did it just to 'pay it forward' since it was done to me when I was trying to level

They did, but I still can't afford it currently. It's 35 for the mount and an additional 10-15 for training. And I want to have at least a little left over, so we're talking maybe 60G before I'd feel comfortable buying one.

Not sure how my auction experiment is working. Healthy profit on anything I sell, but a lot of unsold items.

I put anyone who camps me on my ignore list, not to ignore them but so I can remember them. No sense punishing others for the idiocy of a few. I intend to pay back those who deserve it when I get to a high enough level.

I only corpse camp people who were previously ****ing with me.

And like I said, from my experiences, the people who go out of their way to sit around corpse camping people half their level generally lack the skills needed to compete with people their own level.

I say this because it's what I've experienced when leveling. I have the benefit when leveling these days to have a couple of 70's. So when a 70 comes and corpse camps me when I'm level 30, I bring out one of my 70's, and like clockwork, whenever this happens my 70 cleans the floor with them. So much so that it's laughable. I then proceed to corpse camp them until they take rez sickness or log out. I have never, not once, ever been beaten on my 70 by whoever was corpse camping me on my lowbie.

And Digi, if you want money train up Mining and skinning while leveling. Those (mining in particular) will get you money really really fast.
