World of Warcraft

Yeah, I began using the arrow keys, but that was just too difficult. But the other keys to open the equips window and such were just confusing. Not to mention the whole chatting methods. lol If my girlfriend wasn't talking me through all of it, I'd probably have stopped right there. Then again...I never did look at a guide for it. She just kinda told me to give it a try and I did.

Do you use to tool tips in game? those help a lot

as well as the guide it comes with, didnt take my GF long to figure out how to play

Not quite, I didn't even look at the guide. lol Course I should have, but she wanted it all right then. What could I do? I think I'll be playing more tonight trying to at least get to level 10.

make sure you use tool tips

Yeah, WoW isn't the greatest for just picking it up and playing. I read all the manuals and strategy guides and stuff, and still had fairly regular questions through my first 30 levels or so. I can't imagine how lost someone might be if they go in blind.

My sister didn't even discover talent points until level 20, because they never say sh*t to you about them.

As far as MMO's go, WoW is by far the most newbie friendly. At least you're given some direction right away.

Try playing EQ or FFXI. They just drop you in the world and leave it up to you to figure out what the heck you're supposed to do.

Fair enough. Maybe in comparison to other MMOs it's easy. But compared to other genres, there's still a steep learning curve.

It's reasonable though, Blizzard wanted this game to appeal to hardcore players as well as the casuals, this is what they came up with. It can be a hard combo to balance, but they pull it off quite well.

Even in Outlands, most of the quests are clear as glass. "Go here and do this" or "Go over there and kill X amount of (mob)".

Don't really see any complicated controls here.
Move with WASD, do everything else with mouse if you feel like.

Only with Quest Helper, or similar programs. Sans that mod, I've known people to become insanely frustrated with quests. Not all of them, mind you, but enough that it becomes an issue. I've even encountered a few where the boss, mob, etc. isn't where they're supposed to be, according to either the instructions and QH, and haven't been able to complete those quests.

I'm not saying it's less intuitive than other MMOs. Clearly it's an improvement. But that doesn't mean it's a cakewalk for even hardcore fans, unless they have a lot of help (see below).

Didn't say the controls were complex. The game itself is fairly deep and complex. They hold your hand remarkably little for the amount that there is to learn. I had to be taught by others how to use the majority of chat functions, what kind of gear was needed for my class-type, what stat modifiers were important for my class, what trades I could use, what trades I could learn in addition to my 2 main ones, the existence of the extra placeholders for spells/skills/etc. above the main number bar and on the side of the screen, what mods I should download to make things easier. Etc. etc. And that's just off the top of my head. And I read through nearly the whole manual first, and am familiar with RPG gaming as much as anyone. I feel bad for younger newbs who don't have friends/guild/etc. to guide them through everything.

Lineage 2 didnt hold your hand at all.. as a matter of fact.. the instant I walked out of the noob spawn point at level 1, a level 75 shoved a dagger in my ass.. 😬

So I'm trolling random WoW websites for all kinds of fun, possibly useful, tips: Hunters tips, pets, PvP, etc. And I come across the scam-riddled world of gold farming. Interesting stuff. Most want to sell you their book for circa $30. But a fair number of free tips can be found with some work. Mostly it's what you would expect: variations on "go collect loot, then sell it for profit" except it tells you where to farm for the best loot (it varies depending on your class, since each class specializes against certain foes), and provides benchmarks for determining what is and isn't a good deal on the Auction House.

Doesn't seem particularly like $30 material, but more just helping players out with what they sort of already know. And it would take time. Many days to amass the kind of cash that most of the programs espouse. I'm quite sure that if I was trolling for cash for maybe 30 hours of game time (at lvl 70, of course), without any help, I could amass a solid 1000+ gold without too much trouble.

Anyone have any similar stories? Most of the 70's I know seem to be pretty set money-wise, so I can't imagine it's much of a problem.

its not.. at 70 you have access to daily quests.. which give 10 or 11 gold per upon completion

Yeah, I don't see what the big deal is. Thanks though. Besides, why kill yourself getting thousands when you can do less and just get as much as you need.

On my rogue I am a Miner/Jewelcrafter. Those two things combine to garner ridiculous income.

You can make about 200g an hour if you're lucky and get a good amount of ore from mining. Of course, you need an epic flyer for this to work. That combined with the daily quests and you can make 300g a day just by doing dailies and mining/prospecting for about an hour a day. If you really tried you could make 1k gold a day pretty easily, just palying for maybe 6 hours or something.

And as far as questhelper goes, it's an incredibly useful mod, but it is wrong sometimes. Usually just reading the quest itself will tell you where you need to go. Sometimes it's a pain because you need to find a named mob, and he wanders around. But for the most part the quests are pretty easy.

The Outland quests are much better, though. They're much clearer and more efficient.

Final fantasy was quite easy.. you just... level.. level... level

grind grind grind

The girlfriend helped me just last night with some guidance and things have been going much more smooth. Even found my first green labeled 2h axe off of a kill. Don't know how much it'll bring me in the auction house, but soon as I pay for the account (and actually get to use it...lol) I'll find that soon enough.

The game does seem a lot more fun now and I can't wait to start going in instances. Oh, and the whole mining profession is really an upside for me. Didn't think WoW even had mining and such til yesterday.

Probably 50 silver. What class are you?

lol Sorry, not quite sure how I didn't see your response earlier. I'm an undead rogue. Only level 10 so far and thanks to my girlfriend taking me through an instance (on her level 70 shaman) I've got a lot of other greens I'm gonna try to auction off. Of course, trouble being I've no idea how to price them is all. Other than I suppose compare it with the prices other people put up.

Should be really entertaining when I get the chance.
