This flick actually surprised me. I enjoyed the simplicity of it. The best scene was when cruise confronted tim robbins, and all you saw was the door closing. You just never see that in movies. It was probably the funnest movie i have seen this year.

So simple they forgot to give a plot to the movie. The more I think about it, the more I dislike it, actually.

I mean, "ID4" took from the original "War of the Worlds", and then the new "War of the Worlds" swiped from "ID4", and Spielburg, not wanting to reheat the same old dish, made some changes that made absolutely no sense, especially in

Spoiler:
the lightning storm that sent the pilots to the tripods. Why did they "plan" the invasion? Why didn't they just come down and invade like in the original? Why did they plant ships instead of conquering the Earth before it were inhabited, or scarcely populated? Why did they need Earth, anyway? What's their motivation?

It was a pretty sloppy, and boring movie when you come to think of it.

sigh

I actually appreciated that Spielberg decided to go the route he did. I am more than positive that Spielberg and everyone else involved were aware of the unanswered questions. However, like signs, Spielberg chose to tell the story of an alien invasion through the perspective of a family. Thus we knew only what that family did. I think it allowed for more of an intense and hopeless feeling. Moives like this require you to suspend reason. It is for one purpose only and that is entertainment. All of the questions that you were left with seem like they could be answered by your own conclusions. I genuinly cared for the main characters, maybe that is why Spielberg chose to keep it simple, becuase more answers leave more questions, and that tends to pull you out of the movie.

i agree^

Same exact thing was done by Roland Emmerich in ID4, which makes this all the more of a rehash of two previous movies, with nothing new to add.

I was mildly entertained, just because of spaceships and aliens, but the rest was honestly old hat. While the motivation, in retrospect, was self-explanatory, I think the plot device could have been thought out a little more thoroughly.

Id4 was more broad. Maybe it was the writing or acting, but i had far more complaints with ID4, but thats becuase i just plain loath the film. After first seeing WOTW i was satisfied but not completely. I too wanted more answers and expected to see a more worldly view of the invasion, but then i realized. The momment that the film gave any kind of scientific explantion or scenes of world domination it would have comprised the claustrophobia and mystery of the film. The film never tried to be more than what it was and that is a straight forward ride of excitment. I understand where your coming from though. nine times out of ten i would have had some major problems with this flick, but i guess i caught it on the right day.

And about the ending,

Spoiler:
the world isn't really saved. What's to prevent the aliens from just coming back in hazmat suits with their own food and water supply?

nothing, but it would take them a long damn time, assuming they are from outside of our solar system. By the time they return, I'm sure we would have been able to study their technology and learn from it for a future invasion.

War of the Worlds: Red vines? (spoilers maybe)

Ok, I didn't really get this part. The red vines are full of blood and stuff, right?

It looked like they were harvesting humans to turn our bodies into one giant living organism or something. It looked like the machines were powered by blood...

Could anyone clarify what that scene was about? Thanks.

ok guys, right now we have about a kagillion War of the Worlds threads here, and it's getting kinda crazy. so.........this is going to be the official War of the Worlds thread. please have all the rest of your discussion of this movie in this thread. thank you

you can ask this question in the oficial war of the worlds thread. and if your going to use spoilers if you could use the [spoiler] thingys, thank you!

That dude in the basement said they used the blood as fertiliser... and he also said they 'drank' the blood...

😕

I dunno...

Use your imagination. That's the point.

ok, thanks guys. Didn't know about any official thread...

I was really disappointed. I mean the movie was fairly entertaining but after the 1st half hour, their was not much mystery or development left. It was just constant running and hiding. The ending was just awful as well.

Spoiler:
The boy magically survived when the hill pretty much exploded. It showed that the humans only took down one of the tripods by themselves and then all of a sudden 'they just started walking around in circles and fell over'. The ending was so fast and so anti-climatic.
The more I think about it, the more I dislike the movie.

well, i for one Loved this movie. i just got back from seeing it and i must say i am very impressed. action, drama, it had it all!!!

Except for a legit story.
