Hey guys. New to the forum here but I've been online in various places since about 1997
Anyways, it's been a slow work day and so I compiled the top 10 at each spot (top 5 goalkeepers) according to you guys in order:
Please correct me if I get them on the wrong club or get a name wrong
Goalkeeper:
Gianluigi Buffon - Juventus
Iker Casillas - Real Madrid
Oliver Kahn - Bayer Munich
Nelson Dida - AC Milan
(Tied) Petr Cech - Chelsea, Francesco Toldo - Inter Milan
Defenders:
Roberto Carlos – Real Madrid
Alessandro Nesta – AC Milan
Rio Ferdinand – Manchester United
Fabio Cannavaro – Inter Milan
John Terry – Chelsea
Lilian Thuram – Juventus
Paolo Maldini – AC Milan
Ashley Cole – Arsenal
(Tied) Sol Campbell – Arsenal, Marcos Cafu – AC Milan, Michel Salgado – Real Madrid
Midfielders:
Ronaldinho – Barcelona
Zinedine Zindane – Real Madrid
Patrick Vieira – Arsenal
Luis Figo – Real Madrid
Frank Lampard – Chelsea
Christiano Ronaldo – Manchester United
David Beckham – Real Madrid
Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
Pavel Nedved – Juventus
(Tied) Rickardo Kaka – AC Milan, Francesco Totti – AS Roma
Strikers/Forwards:
Thierry Henry – Arsenal
Andriy Shevchenko – AC Milan
Ronaldo – Real Madrid
Ruud van Nistelrooy – Manchester United
Raul – Real Madrid
Adriano – Inter Milan
Wayne Rooney – Manchester United
Alessandro Del Piero – Juventus
Fernando Morientes – Liverpool
Chrisian Vieri – AC Milan
I noticed Robinho didn’t get voted at all. Not even on any “Future Stars” lists. Is he really that bad or do people just not know him yet? Also I’m curious as to what people think of some players in the MLS in the States like Landon Donovan, Dwayne De Rosario, Taylor Twellman, Jaime Moreno, Pat Onstad, Chris Albright, Kevin Hartman, or Matt Reis.
I wasn't adding in my own players. This is what people here were voting on. Frankly I agree with at least the top 5 in each area of the pitch, but I also felt there was perhaps a player or two missing (one of which I mentioned and the rest I didn't).
Mostly I'd like to know what the impression the international fans have of some of the MLS's top talents. The USA does have a decent player or two playing in European leagues mostly for mid-table team (except Beasley who's playing for PSV Eindhoven). I've heard some say the MLS has become better than the Mexican Leagues, some say not. Some say the MLS couldn't compete with the African leagues and I tend to think that's a load of crap...but I want to know from European and South American fans what do you think of some of the MLS's top players? Do any of them belong on ANYONE's top players list?

i only know landon donoven. he is a good player. how is freddy adu coming along?

I only know about Landon Donovan. Personally, I think he is a decent player in the MLS but is basically not good enough to play in the European leagues. Hence he is now back in the MLS.
If you watch Fox Soccer Channel here in the US, there is a show called Fox Football Friday...and they also say the same thing about Landon.
As for Freddy Adu... he has a lot of potential and when he reaches the age of 17/18, he should go to Europe to further his development

The reason people think MLS has become better than Mexican leagues is because of the team Chivas USA. Chivas USA is an arm of Chivas in Mexico. And basically Chivas in Mexico sends a bunch of reserve players to play in Chivas USA. And I think last season, Chivas USA did not play well at all... and people have the wrong idea that Chivas USA is the same as Chivas in Mexico. So they think the MLS is better than the Mexican league.
Personally, I have watched the MLS and am not that impressed by it. Not physical enough and slow paced...and for those Americans who only watch "soccer" by watching MLS, I can see why they would call soccer boring. True, MLS teams have played teams in Europe during the off-season (in Europe), but I think the non-competitive nature of the games makes the score "close." But if a European team treats a game against an MLS side more seriously (as if they are playing in the Champions League), then I think there will be a big gap between the two sides.
As for the top players in the MLS, a lot of them are excellent..would be great to see them play in European leagues which would also be good for their development.
there are a few good italian players around
nesta(one of the worlds best defenders)
maldini(world class defender)
pirlo(class centrel midfield player, important for Milan)
cassano( top talent, will be leaving after the season is over, either to madrid or juventus)
Zambrotta ( one of the best wing backs in the world)
totti (a bit overrated but still can provide that touch of class)
Gilardino( one of the best strikers in italy at the moment)
luca toni( great talent, top scorer in seria a, destined for a good career)
as for raul, he isnt as potent as he once was but still arguably one of the greatest strikers in the past 10 years.
just compile top 10 in each position, 5 GK's like the other guy:
GK:
- Victor Valdes
- Petr Cech
- Gianluigi Buffon
- Iker Casillas
- Paul Robinson
Defenders:
- Terry
>
>
- Nesta
- Lucio
- Maldini
- Puyol
- Maldini
- Cole
- Chivu
- Salgado
- Cannavaro
Midfielders:
- Ronaldhino
- Gattuso
- Juninho Pernambucano
- Lampard
- Makelele
- Deco
- Ballack
- Riquelme
- Joaquin
- Kaka
Strikers:
- Andriy Shevchenko
- Adriano
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic
- Thierry Henry
- Alberto Gilardino
- Samuel Eto'o
- Fernando Torres
- Ronaldo
- David Trezeguet
- Roy Makaay
honourable mentions: Leo Messi, Vicente, Obafuma Martins, Walter Samuel, Luca Toni, Diego Forlan

you missed out the single best Italian player, Genarro Ivan Gattuso.
an absolute rock in midfield, better defensive midfielder than Makelele in my opinion, and has a better range of passing and stronger determination
thing is IMO that if you want to create a dream team you only have 11 spots.
I'll try to give it a go tho
Playing in a 3-4-3 formation, with a diamond midfield
GoalKeeper:
Buffon or Cech
Defence:
Nesta, Terry and Zambrotta
Midfield:
L/C:Gerrard, DM:Makelele; R/C: Kaka, AM: Ronaldhino
Strikers:
Shevchenko, Van Nistelrooy, Eto'o (last one was a tough call)
They'd play like this
------------Buffon---------
-Zambrotta-Terry-Nesta-
----------Makelele--------
-Gerrard-----------Kaka-
--------Ronaldhino-------
-Sheva---Ruud---Eto'o--
It's probably too attacking for real games but I'm a fan of playing with 3 strikers and I'm also a fan of playing with a diamond midfield (tho I doubt the combo works)
and now for a team that i personally think would work perfectly...
GK:Robinson
WBR:Iraola
WBL:Young Pyo Lee or Chiquinho
DC:Terry
DC:Nesta
DMC: Xabi Alonso
DMC: Gerrard/Carrick
AML: Juninho Pernambucano
AMC: Ronaldinho
AMR: Joaquin
FC: Zlatan Ibrahimovic
i chose Iraola (Athletico Madrid) and Chiquinho (Santos) because theyre, imo, 2 of the best wing backs in the game... although i honestly did struggle to think of a left back that fitted my exact idea behind their play.
Reason i chose both Xabi Alonso and Gerrard or Carrick in DMC positions is because not only are they decent defensively for that position, they also have such massive quality in their passing accuracy and range, they're practically deep play makers, while also being able to cover the corners to compensate for the wing backs.
The Attacking half of the midfield five (Juninho, Ronaldhino and Joaquin) speaks for itself really, such goalscoring and providing potential.
Since this is a wide style team (wing backs and attacking midfield wingers) i chose Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front because he can head the ball as well as being able to thrive off Ronaldhino's through balls etc.
--------------Robinson--------------
---------Terry------Nesta-----------
Iraola--------------------Chiquinho
--------------------------------------
------Alonso--------Gerrard--------
--------------------------------------
Joaquin----Ronaldinho----Juninho
--------------------------------------
------------Ibrahimovic------------
Massivly attacking team, seeing as even Gerrard likes to roam forward... i feel there's sufficient quality to compensate for the susceptability at the back, which is relatively slight anyway
