Having had a difficult childhood isn't equivalent to talent 🙂
Go listen to "The Grudge" by Tool (or if you can get your hands on it, and care to bother, the live version of APC's "The Outsider"... the one from the Jay Leno show), "Shove It" by Deftones, or almost any Soundgarden song, then tell me Chester can scream. In the grand spectrum of things, he's actually not particularly good at screaming. Cornell and Keenan's vocal power, even when they're not screaming, is clearly tenfold that of Benington's. Chester screams for about 4 seconds max, sounds very strained, and sounds even worse doing it live.
I'm serious about listening to that stuff. If you think Chester can scream, you MUST hear Chris Cornell or Maynard J Keenan. Or, for that matter, Chino from Deftones.
Popularity does not equal talent or non-suckiness.

I don't see what your point is by bringing up his childhood since it doesn't have anything to do with his music ability. I don't like Chester because he is a terrible singer and since this is the music forum, that's where I am going to judge him: musical ability.
For example, I don't care for Raas Kass very much as a human being, as personally, I think he's a straight out rascist. But I can admit that the guy is a amazing lyricist and one of the better hip hop artists of our time.
Please, Platinum means NOTHING. Opeth are arguably the best band in the world, yet to my knowledge, they've never gone platinum. It's not because they suck, on the contrary, they make music that puts pretty much every other band to sleep. They haven't gone platinum because they are not something the public would like since their songs aren't generic or watered down like LP's are.
