As anything really certain?

[Two Cents] If there is one thing in life that is certain, it is nothing is certain [/Two Cents]

I know, an contradictory statement. It is true though.

Death.

Some interesting ideas, although I like to think the only real certainty is change, in all its glorious potential.

I agree completely with this. nothing is certain in life (except that)... even death

We know NOTHING with 100% certainty

I know if I cut myself I will bleed. And I know that one day I will die.

You might not. There's a microscopic chance that it will go straight through (without touching the atoms and molecules). Something like one in a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 chance, but possible. You might become invincible with technology, and never die, as the universe is eternal. I know for certain that two cubes cannot equal another cube. Other than a few bits of pure mathematics, nothing is certain.

You mean the blade would become like a hologram and pass straight through me? Explain to me how that could possibly happen. And I still think I'd die even if I had the option of eternal life. I'd eventually get sick of it and kill myself. I don't think the human mind could handle living forever.

When you sit down on a chair, you actually are repelled by a magnetic force, to float about one anstrong above it. There's a microscopic chance that they wouldn't repel you. They tested it out with gold foil, or something like that, and a few particles got through. It's obscenely unlikely though.

You might not though. How could you actually know?

I still don't see how that would make the blade pass through without cutting me. And believe me, I would off myself in that situation. I might want to extend my life for a bit, but I wouldn't want to live forever. And wouldn't I be killed when the universe collapsed in on itself for another big bang? If I understand the theory correctly doesn't it suggest that all matter will eventually work it's way back to the center of the universe and another big bang will occur?

The atoms in the blade might not collide with the atoms in your hand. The blade would just go through without touching your hand.

Suppose you were locked in a stasis pod, that had a self sufficent system, i.e. one that collected all outgoing energy and re-entered it into the system. If the gravity of the universe was to weak to cause a big bang (it might be), you'd never die.

I still don't understand the blade thing in one sense. I know what you mean with regards to the magnetic fields repelling two objects and the possibility that some particles may pass through the field. But wouldn't the solid masses still collide? If it didn't, wouldn't that mean that without these magnetic fields we would in theory be able to pass though 'solid' objects?

And about the self sufficient pod thing, if I weren't in stasis I'd most likely end up going mad and killing myself. And if I we're in stasis for eternity wouldn't I be dead anyway? Sure, my body would be alive but my consciousness would be dead (or permanently suspended). It would be as if I were clinically brain dead but my body was on life support. Is a mind suspended for eternity without any chance of revival dead?

Yes. A description I heard is that the mass inside an atom's space would be like a fly inside a huge stadium. If there was no magnetic field, we'd miss most of the particles.

You might be conscious, but have your memory wiped out every day (for ease of storage). You could watch Simpson reruns for all eternity.

Fair enough, although I did say 'if I cut myself I will bleed'. Not 'if I press a blade against my flesh it will cut me'. 😉

Haha. I like your idea of watching Simpson's reruns for all eternity. That's what I would call eternal damnation. 😄 Although unless a self sufficient pod with memory wiping capabilities and a days supply of Simpson's episodes is invented in my lifetime, my death is still certain.

I concur.
Even death is uncertain. Because no one knows if/what is after death.

actually...death, by itself, is certain 😕 what comes after it is independent of death

I still say that NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is certain... not even death.

You cannot tell me that you know for CERTAIN that someday you will die. You could make a well informed assumption based on the fact that noone has lived past 130 years (or whatever), but you don't know that you will die until you are dead.

Just as you dont KNOW you will bleed if you cut yourself until you cut yourself and you bleed (or don't bleed - even though it is 'scientifically impossible' if you cut deep enough, who's to say science is CERTAIN?).

the only thing that's permanent is change...

Everything dies- there is no dispute there......
Death, taxes, good, bad.....
Those are certain.

I'm sorry, but death is certain. Just as our ancestors before us have died so will we. What makes us different to the generations before us? We're no more immortal than they were. I don't have to cut myself to know I will bleed. I have bled before and I will bleed again. How do I know I will die? Because (to take a quote from a great movie/book) "You are the same rotting organic matter as everything else". My body ages and one day it will shut down. That is death and it is very certain.

The only thing that is certain is that I am your master. Bow minions! I demand animal/virgin sacrifices with a cherry on top!
