what i think hapened is basicaly, he came into the room really confidant knowing he was going to kill the only one thatcould ever harm him and lilywas standing infront of the crib so voldy says "get out of the way" then lily says "no you will not hurt harry"(or something t that extent) then voldy says "ok, bye avada kedavra" and then he proceeds to harry
so lily didn't hafta die, but he had no trouble killng her just the same
