You can't see anything from your current viewpoint- you are still inside your ship. All that has happened is that Roan asked to use sense on the transfer point to the pirate ship, and I told him that you sensed a guard on the far side.
So the slowest part of 'running up to him', Roan, would be in having to open the two doors, the door from this ship and the door from the ship you are docked with.
He hands them over.
The notes, by Kenobi, describe the process via which, after being apprehended by Obi-Wan on Naboo, the Viceroy has engaged himself in a number of devices to delay and defer and, if possible, remove his upcoming trial. But, following Qui-Gon's supicions that the Sith were behind the invasion,- Darth Maul's presence confirming this- Obi-Wan pushed the point and eventually came to the conclusion that the Viceroy was looking for a way out of his circumstance, and betraying his former employers did not trouble him at all. This is how this situation developed.
However, the Viceroy's fears that his life were in danger were more recent; his insistence on a Jedi bodyguard was predictable, but Obi-Wan couldn't do the job as the Viceroy has... issues with him- besides, Obi-Wan is busy training his Padawan. This is how the job got handed over to Gundy, and now you.
The Viceory's fears stem from apparent politicising on his homeworld, Neimodia- which Obi-Wan notes is a damn vicious place; the previous Viceroy was almost certainly assassinated by Gunray and it is relatively (though tacitly) accepted practice in the Federation. Gunray was looking weak after Naboo and was an obvious target- but in fact, his power has recovered considerably and he still remains in absolute control.
However, two months ago, the Viceroy's cousin was killed on Naboo- very much murdered. The Viceroy claims that the same assassins are the ones he is worried will kill him. Obi-Wan said that at first, he was certain that this was another ruse by the Viceroy to delay things. But, two things muddled the issue- first, there was no clear reason to kill his Cousin; it advanced no-one politically whilst the Viceroy is still in power. Secondly, and here is where things turn interesting, the Viceroy hired a private investigator to look into his cousin's death. Two weeks ago, that investigator was murdered in turn. This was particularly vicious.
However, here Gundark has added some notes. The autopsy report on the investigator (which arrived after Kenobi handed over the case) report that the investigator was killed by some form of projectile spikes, Gundark is certain that this is the work of a bounty hunter named Balek- it is certainly his chosen style, using a spike launcher built into his artificial arm.
There is an attached note to look at Balek's file, to further explore the consequences of this.
"Balek?" says Ithrorn, interested. "Isn't he that so-called lawman we met on Damagran who was hunting Kuylen's men?"
"From what I've heard from Xeth Tam (I'm sure you remember him, Ithrorn), that's exactly who Balek was. He's a bounty hunter, if I'm correct. Attacked Gundy several times as well after that incident on Damagran, while she had the price on his head. Xeth says he's seen Balek once or twice over the past two years..."
The file on Balek reads as follows:
"Balek was raised on the deadly frontier world of Gauda Prime, where learning to kill at a young age was the only way to survive. Gauda Prime was the victim of lax Republican laws failing to prevent what amounted to a suspension of its penal code- as companies wanting to exploit its mineral resources wanted a quick way to deal with the farmers in the way. Once the law was removed from Gauda, the slaughter began. Minerals started to flow, and with no law there, scum, scoundrels and criminals of all sorts fllourished there. Balek, his farming parents shot dead before his eyes, soon learned to give no quarter and no pity in order to survive.
Decades late, after the company men became rich and wanted rid of all these criminals, the Republic came to Gauda Prime's rescue. Organising a clean-up was difficult and some legal problems obstructed Jedi involvment. Instead, funds were diverted to nearby local authorities to deal with the problem.
Which meant this- Gauda Prime became the biggest bounty hunter hotspot in the Galaxy. Millions upon millions were being paid to have every scum, scoundrel and criminal on Gauda Prime rooted out and killed. This was a good opportunity for Balek, who put his callous skills of killing to as much use as before- now being paid for it. Balek emerged as the most successful Bounty Hunter on Gauda Prime- it made his name.
It was on another primitive world that the now famous Balek had the second defining moment in his life. He raped a girl for pleasure- although arrested for it, the archaic laws of that world which considered women as owned by the males of their family meant that he received only a 500 credit fine for damaging property. As for an appeal to Republican law- you have to be joking!
Her brother, however, did not take kindly to this, and took Balek to task personally. This was a problem though- her brother was a Jedi. And in a moment of what the Council called 'weakness', he cut off Balek's arm. Ironically, the same laws that Balek had abused now abused him- the Jedi's actions were judged fair retribution- although he had to re-pay Balek his fine!
The Council, of course, took a dim view of the matter and the Jedi, having given into anger, has been receving treatment and counselling ever since. For Balek, this was a disaster. The arm he replaced, with a cybernetic one full of weapons and tricks that serve him well. But his lifetime of combat experience had proven useless- the Jedi was so fast, the lightsabre so unstoppable! Balek developed a deep, utter and total hatred for all things Jedi, for all things sabre. Ever since, he has worked on developing a style that he can fight a Jedi- or other force user- with, and equipment to match.
Balek is tall, and dresses in patched, rough travelling gear; he has messed-up curly hair and a very noticeable scar over his right eye; he has a grizzled, worn face and is quite brusque in person. And for a non-Force User, he is VERY fast."
Windu continues the story.
"Balek's appointment to enforce law on Damagran was very temporary Ithrorn. His true occupation is bounty hunting, and the bounties on Kuylen and his men gave him an excuse to hunt wielders of lightsabres, which have always annoyed him greatly.
Balek's ambitions expanded beyond that, though. The pirate chief Pelloran extended the bounties after the death of Faylar on Damagran, who placed the original ones."
"We should have been able to save Faylar," says Ithrorn. "That was a bad day. Of course, he'd be spending his life in jail if we had caught him, but even so, no-one deserved to be caught by Kuylen's people. Pelloran... he was the pirate that Kuylen and Faylar used to work with, yes?"
"That's right," says Windu, "but the three of them fell out soon after Gundark first turned up. Faylar betrayed Kuylen for which Kuylen;s men later killed him, but Pelloran remains alive and very wealthy; he kept the bounties on Kuylen's men ans extended them to cover the Jedi responsible for his troubles as well- Master Gundark."
"And Balek took the bounty? But as the file says, Balek is always careful never to do anything illegal."
"And indeed," says Windu, "Balek never once took a shot at any Jedi inside Republican space where he might run into legal implications. But he did continue to make attempts on Kuylen's men, and struck at Gundark and her team on Nar Shadda, and later at Kuylen's abandoned base on Demarus. There Xeth reported he was trapped, without a vessel, in a deep cavern on that world. That was two years ago. Master Grevor Scovione paod a visit to Pelloran around the same time, and with 'aggressive' negotiation, got the bounty from Gundark removed."
"And now?"
"And now Gundark suspects Balek is back, and her Instincts are very sound," says Windu.
"And she thinks she murdered this PI? But why would he do that? Was there a bounty on him?"
"No," says Windu, "and that is odd. Not all of Balek's collected bounties over time have legal, of course, but he was discreet about them. This, if it is him, is cold-blooded murder for no gain in full view of the authorities on a core world. Very unlike Balek; if it is him, I have no idea what it is that has made him act so rashly."
"But it suggests there was something important to hide?"
"Absolutely," says Windu.
At this point, you ask your question, Vlad.
"That may well be a good idea," says Windu.
"But Neimodia will take a day to reach," says Ithrorn. "Won't the issue be over by then?"
"Perhaps," says Mundi. "But perhaps not, and if it is not, we may further increase the risk to the Viceroy if we have not checked this apparent lead."
Indeed, this is a good time to work out the split- at least one Master on each would be preferable.
You have no reason to think that Balek's mind would have sensed oddly, Vlad. And also... even though Balek is fast, he still wouldn't be able to time jumping onto a speeding vehicle from the top of a 4000 story building; that's just beyond normal people. He might be quite athletic (Gundark can tell you that he is pretty nippy with the projectile harness he uses for mobility) but he's not a miracle worker, unlike you Jedi.
Also, Jelena, Vlad didn't sense a vehicle already there, just one speeding away down below when the assassin jumped.
Roan, yup, you are up against your side of the hatchway.
