Is Christopher Tolkien Evil

Started by shadowy_blue3 pages

Christopher Tolkien may be an ass, but he has good reasons. He is mainly trying to protect the integrity of his fathers work; most movies destroy the true spirit of the books. He has also been harassed by LOTR fanatics most of his life he's sick of it.

I do not HATE him; without Christopher, we would have neither "The Silmarillion" or "Unfinished Tales" today. Furthermore, I can't really hate a person that I don't even know in real life. Yeah, there's a lot of things going around on the net and in the papers, but is everything true?

I don't HATE Christopher Tolkien (but I don't love him either..I just don't like him..but I don't hate him...and he's certainly not evil). I just wish he would see how happy we the fans are with the films... If it wasn't for the fans loving his father's book then we would have never heard of the name Tolkien. 🙂

shadowy 😱 you sat school or summin, comp fixed? 😄

Discos - it must be true if its in the inernet

@AD he (JRRT) did say that he doesn't think that making a film of LoTR would be a good idea 😉

@Smodden - 😆

I am definetly not up for a silmarillon movie, the lord of the rings were split into 2 books per paperback😕

imagine how much stuff they would have to do for the sil, it would have to be in chapters, a sort of tarrantino style

Heck yeah, JRR was VERY anti-film, and he would have loathed the recent versions, juding by the critique he made of a fan script once sent to him.

Chris's dislike of things, therefore, is baed on 3 things.

1. Carrying on his father's legacy in that vein

2. Chris is a purist- purest of the pure you could call him- and so has no appreciation for the changes, and if you told him it was to make the story nore accessible as a film, he would simply take that as a reason why it is unsuitable for film treatment, which returns us to point 1.

3. In Chris' time the LOTR community, predating the net, was an intellectual powerhouse. The onset of the films has rather demolished that.

but it has brought more people to the lord of the rings universe.

i seem to remember you telling me you cant argue with the masses 😊

i know jrr tolkien said filming lotr wouldnt be the best idea, but he never said he didnt WANT a film. i remember reading he was quite excited hearing about the animated version, and then absolutely loathing it once he saw. i think that put him off quite a bit

He wrote in his Last Will that he does not allow that Disney gets the rights for the film 😆

Hey, tell it to Chris, not me, that's just the way he is...

I can tell you right now- JRR's primary criticism of the fan script sent to him was that Aragorn 'brandished' his sword. JRR said this was impossible to do with a broken sword.

The recent version had him using a different sword entirely. We have to face it- JRR would have flipped.

But there you go. Book and film should be judged on seperate merits. The reasons any of us like the films are not reasons the Tolkien line would appreciate and... well, that kind of is a dead end in the argument.

yeah we cant expect it all.

although not getting the sword reforged until rotk, having elves at helms deep and at one point arwen at helms deep. was pushing it

legend has it, in the cemetery where tolkien is buried, you could hear his belt buckle scraping the coffin as he was turning 😉

@exa: well i wouldnt give disney the rights to anything. they pushed lemmings over cliffs for that film 🙁

Bump

he didnt base anyone on him I think.

Cos he said that in the prologue... His book isnt there to mean anything.

oh hell internet ****s up again 😐

😆 oh, one of my "fav" threads 🙄

😆 five members think he's evil... one thinks he's nice? 😑

..........I hope he can somehow avoid a movie of the Silmarillion 😐 and I hope they will respect what he thinks about a Hobbit-movie 😬

No....I'll film the Silmarillion in ten year.....twenty movies! 😱

fear fear ... damn commercialism 😐
