Do guns in the home make us safer?

taking away guns doesn't make a psycho any less psychotic.

take away the guns, and then there will be bombs. Find a way to prevent the bombs, then they'll try poisoning the food in the cafeteria.

Those kids were out of their mind, but they weren't dumb. If they wanted to kill people, they were going to do it, and no one would have been able to stop them without some sort of Orwell-eque 1984, Big Brother, watching over them all day and all night.

I'm a huge supporter of having the right to own a gun legaly. As mention before Guns aren't the problem. The problem comes from neglecting to keep guns in well protected place. Keep trigger locks on and make sure that the weapon is not loaded while in storage.

Now, do guns make our home safer? I been thinking more in detail and to be honest nothing can really make your home safe. Not even alarms. A skillful burglar can highwire your system and get in. Most likely a confrontation migh occur between the burglar and the resident. So, would you rather be equip and prepare from the attack of a burglar OR be at the mercy of burglar that might be willing to kill YOU and anybody else (including family members) that might get in their way?

Count me in! I say Lock and Load.

...eeeerrm, i don't think so..... 🤪 .....

Do you have anything useful to say, or is your whole vocabulary full of useless colloquialisms?

But I must agree no guns are good, When have you ever heard of someone accually stopping a robber because he had a gun?
Many times...

There really is no universal answer to a question like this. For some people it's yes, for others it's no. Certain factors determine whether a gun is putting you at higher risk or helping you. Factors like if you have kids, you are putting them at risk by having a loose firearm in your home. Especially young kids who are too young to be properly educated about the safe use of firearms or teenagers who are at a rebellious stage and are prone to mischief. Thing is, not everybody does have kids.

Another factor is if you know how to use it. If you do purchase a gun, you should go to a shooting range and learn how to properly use it. Try to perfect your aim to the best of your ability and increase the effectiveness of you gun to decrease the chances of a robber turning your own weapon against you. Also it really depends where you live. If you live in a high crime area by yourself or only with other adults, buying and properly learning how and when to use a gun may be a good idea. It really sucks to not feel safe in your own home. If you live in out in suburbia somewhere then your demand for a gun as protection is a lot less.

i beleive having guns in homes is a whole load of bull, more guns in homes means more people own guns, mor guns means more people using guns, more people using guns more violence and gun crime, more violence and gun crime, more people scared, the more people are scared the larger the change of making quick and sometimes, dangerous decisions like firing a weapon at a fellow human... and it all swings out of proportion, just like the US's current gun crime figures...

this is entirely opinion, but the film "bowling for comombine" has really made me feel strong about the legal weaponary topic

Yeah except gun crimes won't go away with no guns in the homes. The majority of the time if somebody is going to go shoot someone they get the gun illegally, rather than legally purchasing one and making it easy for the cops to trace the murder back to them.

yeah but if you look at gun crime figures the americans (where guns are legal) have much higher figures then any other country.... that is recorded anyways

Yeah well America has a lot of crime, who's to say that'll go away if you make guns illegal. Did making drugs illegal make them go away?

good point.... look at the brief history of america thing here!

I've already seen Bowling for Columbine. Good movie, much better than Fahrenheit 911.

yeah, i think it was better 'cos it wasn't just taking a cheap shot at bush, even though i don;t like bush

Yeah.Unless u no how to use it properly

Australia generally had lax gun laws until a few years ago when a chap went on a shooting rampage in a quiet little town (24 or 23 people died). This led to new laws being put into place that limited the kinds of gun and the amount people could own (no automatics) enforced proper storage of weapons, brought into play exhaustive checks to get a licence. There was also a buy back scheme for now illegal weapons. Now, this didn't end all crime. It wasn't a magic bullet (uh hum) against violence, but statistically crime did go down, especially cases of gun related crime. Less in terms of armed robbery, accidental shootings, intentional shootings.

Now really, I don't see any real reason guns make a home safer (especially here, if your guns are locked away and your home is invaded the crim wont wait around for you to get them out I am sure), in fact it often looks like it just adds an extra risk. But then I am reminded of Homer's line about needing guns to stop the King of England coming back and pushing people around...

I think guns can make a home safer, cos they can protect you or just put your mind at ease that you have one there, but there are som many things that can go wrong with them, anyone could get hurt including a family member or something so it really would depend on the personw ho owns it

hmmmm, interesting thread.

"guns dont kill people, people do" - i completly agree with this statement

My reasons being, and people have said them before, if i person wants to kill someones, they will find a means of doing it, being with a gun, an knife, whatever. They could use a gun, but if a gun is left in a case forever, it is never going to fire, and wont kill anybody, so the only way a gun is going to become active is if a person picks it up, then it is down to the individual how that weapon is used.

Its the same with any weapon, a sword in a cabinet is harmless, if someone foolish removes it from the cabinet, then it becomes dangerous, if someone trained in the weapons use removes it, things will be fine. same with guns.

thats just my 2 cents, ive never lived anywhere where you can own a gun in the home without a full liscence.

I think, it depends how responsible the persons are, if we are talkin' of having a gun at home it can be heavily dangerous and even more when you have little kids in there.

Im not so sure. I won't have a gun at home, I even can't, here in Germany is not aloud to have a gun only with a special permison and only if you have a special reason (like being in danger).

People thinks theres much criminality and for that they need the gun, I think theres much criminalitly 'cause is so easy to get a weapon, everybody who don't agree with me will meet my .45 ^^

The reality is insane.
For what weapons are made?
and is for something not good.

I do'nt believe in gun control for different reasons. My dad has a gun that is not loaded but it keeps us safe just in case of a break in.The first thing Hiter did when he took over Garmany was to take all the guns away.
So yes I do think guns in home makes us safer. As long as a parent or parents hid them where younger kids can't find them.Or not have anyone that is loaded.JM2guns
