Example:
You surprise a thief in your house without a gun in your hand, he will maybe kick you down and take your things but when you surprise him with a gun in your hands he don't have a choice if he have a gun he will shoot you. So a gun escalate the situation no matter who have the gun.
Now imagine being shoot because of a gun that even is not loaded.
A gun is the difference loaded or not...
Anyway that's just my opinion, everyone have to decide for himself. ^^
Ok but heres a problem with your example. If a burglar is in your house, we can almost assume it's night. You surprise him with or without a gun, he won't be able to tell the difference at first. He may end up shooting you either way, honestly. He wont be able to see the gun immediately if you have one, or see that you don't have one immediately if you don't.
If you have a gun and you're going to stop him, point the gun at him and tell him to freeze. If he reaches for his gun or goes to point it at you, you'll have plenty of time to shoot him before he could shoot you. That is, if you aren't hesitant in the situation and know what you are doing. You don't sneak up behind him and try to fight him or whatever if you have a gun, you stay a safe distance, have the gun already aimed and ready to fire, then tell him to freeze.

What i wanted to say is that with or without a gun all depends of the situation and of your reaction of course. No one is 100% prepared for an assault or an violent incident.
That's true, but some people may be prepared enough to deal with a burglar using a firearm. People always assume that the burglar is going to be some expert crook like they see in movies and you are the inferior one in the battle against a burglar, when in reality the majority of the time the burglar is some junkie looking for some shit to pawn. I've had my house robbed several times before and it's never been some expert ninja burglar type guys, it's always some junkie looking for a fix. A person with a gun who actually knows how to use it can be much more efficient with their weapon and more prepared than some burglar who is looking for shit to steal.

I guess the general concensus is that they are not safe. My mother has always had a gun in the house. Granted, she didn't when I was a child. But, she did from about the time I was ten. Not only did she keep it loaded(safety on), but I knew where it was. I spent a lot of time home by myself at that age, and she wanted me to be safe. The difference is that I had always been taught to fear and respect the gun. I was actually scared of it. I played with fire, but the thought of handling the gun scared me.
However, since my brother has children and they visit her often, she has gotten rid of the gun.
If your in a situation where a gun is introduced with deadly intentions. You only have a 50/50 chance of resolving the issue with or without a gun for kids, kids do dumb shit. If little timmy redecorates the wall with his brain matter, that is the fault of the owner of the gun for being careless. It should not demerit the action of owning a gun. Guns just dont give totall security one way or another.
