bad movie. great cinematography and it was a masterpiece visually with great film noir style...........but saying anything otherwise even remotely positive is like shooting yourself in the balls.
seriously, why couldn't they stick to the story?~Sado
yeah, the cinematography and some of the set designs were great.
i think Sin City is the movie to blame the same way Matrix is to blame for crap action movies in early 2000's. Matrix introduced wirefu or at least popularized wirefu in hollywood which was great. but then wirefu began being uses in places where it shouldn't even flutter near (case in point being any action movie that came out after 1999, charlie's angels to name a few). Sin City then reintroduced neo-noir style to hollywood along with (typical roderiguez) cheap-as-dirt-sets that were expertly shot and filmed and made Sin City look great. the problem however is that every jackass is trying to pull it off and it doesn't cut it because not everyone is Robert Roderigeuz. same way not everyone is Wachouski brothers. That's why we have to watch such impossibly crap movies like The Spirit and Max Payne because they are trying to work neo-noir but are ruining it.
so while you can't call Matrix and Sin City bad movies in anyway, they are to be blamed for making dilletante directors think they have a grip over things as professional and demanding as film noir. of course, i know that its not their fault per say but the world is too full of idiots to give them an oppurtunity to convince us otherwise.

Yeah, i see what you're saying man. I know you're not actually blaming Matrix or Sin City for being such inspirational movie's but rather, blaming the people that were inspired who failed to present a proper movie. I think the problems with Max Payne lie in bad writing and sub-par Directing. I don't want to discredit the Director entirely because he tried but the elements for a good Noir movie were there. The atmosphere was spot on. They even had a good actor to work with but i dont think the Director new what to do with such a bad script. In the end, there really isn't much that a screen writer, Director and Producer can do with a fly by night movie like this. I'm sure the Studio wanted this movie pumped out as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Had they followed the story from the video game a bit more closely i really think the movie could have worked. We didn't get to know who Max Payne was in the movie and in the game we really only got to know Max Payne through the Noir narration which worked very well. Why was this same NArration missing in the movie? In the movie, Max Payne just came off as some stiff character who was still pissed off about something that happened a long time ago. Yeah, he lost his family but other than that we had no reason to relate to or support his character. I mean, especially when he is going around shooting everybody (many people of which, who had nothing to do with his families murder.)
