Yes, the excuse of defending the country might occasionally be used (it couldn't be for wars like Vietnam or Iraq) but it would still be much more advantageous for the individual to save their own neck; therefore it is just as much a forfeiture of any kind of status under those circumstances as in a manufactured war. A regime that will demand the very existence of an individual is openly authoritarian.
For the record, I would not go to fight in a war for £10 billion pounds, because the odds against getting through it without being killed or maimed are very long indeed...
