Thanos' biggest strength is his intelligence. The only reason there is an infinity gauntlet is because Thanos has enough keen intellect to known that all the gems exist and could be used in such a way.
Thanos is too smart to fight one on one with just about everybody even though he could; he just wouldn't.
He always outthinks his opponents and has minions carry out most his plans and schemes. IMHO I think Thanos could goad Darkseid into going toe to toe which would more than likely end in a physical stalemate, and while Darkseid was raged up (which has been stated that he can be angered forgets he is OP abilities) Thanos while being calm as a cucumber the whole time would have devised a scheme to remove Darkseid off the board at least for the battle.
said all that to say this:
Thanos and Darkseid are both dumb dumb strong. Who's is smarter?
For a long long time now Darkseid has been getting generally low portrayals (with some exceptions of course), while Thanos has been held relatively rock steady.
Now, Darkseid is arguably being lifted up to his highest levels while Thanos has been arguably going downhill (see: Ultimates).
No question at all that Darkseid absolutely stomps now. Back when this thread started, I would have said Thanos.

Just seems too me that Thanos main ability is super duper smarts and Darkseid's is not.
Darkseid does seem to be more powerful as of later times, though Thanos' power seems to be still really undefined as he has never been shown to "go all the way". leaving me to at least wonder how much is he holding back.
could be DS is holding back too?
