X-MEN and the story behind their costumes

Polaris (7th of 12)
A psychological session with super-hero psychiatrist Leonard Samson revealed that Lorna had problems with finding herself attractive. Still, after months of dieting she had lost enough weight to show a little confidence by wearing this revealing costume that she had herself designed. [X-Factor #87]

Polaris (8th of 12)

The government found the red and gold outfit too provocative and subversive, which is why they asked Polaris to stop wearing it. Instead, they gave her a new outfit that was a mix between the team look and her own creation. [X-Factor #93]

Polaris (9th of 12)

One by one, X-Factor fell apart and the new members that joined no longer wore any team uniforms. Havok too had to ditch his outfit to once more wear his containment suit, as his powers were flaring up, Lorna too started to wear an individual costume. [X-Factor #114]

Polaris (10th of 12)

Shortly after Havok’s sudden departure (Lorna believed he had abandoned her), Polaris hardened, which reflected in her new looks. She cut her hair and wore a new suit with armor elements. At the same time, she returned to the familiar blue and gold color scheme – possibly a recent yearning to happier times. [X-Factor #114]

With X-Factor disbanded, Polaris became affiliated with the X-Men again right when they learned the names of the mysterious Twelve. Lorna was one of them and accompanied the team to Egypt in a simulacrum of her fourth X-Factor uniform, though the top was now pale green instead of orange. [Uncanny X-Men #377]

After the crisis, Polaris accepted Magneto’s offer to accompany him to Genosha. While she never officially joined his Acolytes, she was seen wearing two different Acolyte styled uniforms. [Uncanny X-Men #379-380, X-Men (2nd series) #99]

Polaris (11th of 12)

On the island nation, Polaris explored her magnetic powers under Magneto’s tutelage for months, in return providing him with a link to Earth’s magnetic field. Lorna wore a new entirely green costume with black ornamentals. [Magneto Dark Seduction #1]

And...

Recently Lorna showed up at the mansion, somewhat out of her mind. She is once more wearing a new outfit, which seems to contain elements of the Mutant X universe’s Goblyn Queen. Coincidence? [Uncanny X-Men #418]

you got any of jubilee??

jury dear, could you do the same with my precious chamber? *puppy eyes*

Jumpy do Rachel!!! do Rachel!!!

Sorry to ruin the fun... These rule... But surely do Wolverine lol!

Unfortunately... there's no Jubilee in my list yet...
.. and Wolverine... maybe sooner or later... I'll try to consult their designers for that. 😄

Or... I might add Chamber in my list...

and there he goes...

Chamber (1st of 5)

While Chamber did have a standard, red Generation X uniform, he almost always eschewed it in favor of his everyday clothes, which consisted of black leather pants, a jacket or coat and a black shirt, while he used scarves or ribbons to cover up the gaping energy-oozing hole in his chest and where the lower half of his chin used to be. [Generation X #1]

He eventually adopted a look that compromised between both, which was basically a black version of the team uniform with an X-belt and usually his leatherjacket. [Generation X #43]

Chamber (2nd of 5)

When new human students enrolled at the school, the team got new uniforms with masks to protect their identities. This time, Jono participated in the team look. Those uniforms resembled the original X-Men uniforms, replacing black with red. Jono, of course, kept his leather jacket and didn’t really need a mask, as he had to cover the lower half of his face anyway. [Generation X #51]

Chamber (3rd of 5)

After the death of one of their own, the team rededicated itself to their mission and the team got new individual uniforms more resembling streetwear and reflecting their personal tastes. Jono’s consisted of ordinary gray pants, a black shirt with a red X-logo, an oversized black leather-coat and a kind of buttoned leather turtleneck to hide the lower half of his face. [Generation X #64]

Chamber (4th of 5)

A short time later, the team members again received new uniforms, this time consisting of a sort of smart material that helped regulate body temperature and offered passive resistance to impact and the various elements. The overall color scheme was a reddish brown and yellow. Jono’s uniform basically consisted again of gray pants, a reddish brown sweater with a neon-yellow X-symbol, over a skintight sweater of a darker material and his buttoned turtleneck. [Generation X #71]

And...

By the time Chamber fully returned to active duty, the X-Men no longer wore bright costumes, but were using some black leather ensembles that weren’t too different from Jono’s original outfit. The X-Men had a vast supply of different shirts, coats and jackets from which to pick and Chamber either wore a long coat or a leather jacket over his otherwise all black outfit. [Uncanny X-Men #399]

Rachel (1st of 5)

In her future timeline, Rachel was kidnapped and programmed into serving as a mutant tracking “hound”. The spiked leather outfit (originally colored pitch-black) was the regular outfit for these hounds and was first seen in Rachel’s memories. Along with the conditioning Rachel received so-called facial “hound marks,” though later on she used her powers to mask the scars/tattoos. However, when her concentration slipped they were visible. [Uncanny X-Men #189]

Rachel (2nd of 5)

When she joined the X-Men, Rachel had no codename or costume. Instead, she wore civilian clothes and several different versions of leotard outfits.

Rachel (3rd of 5)

It was only after she decided to take on the Phoenix moniker, in honor of her mother, that she started to wear a costume to match the name. [Uncanny X-Men #199, Uncanny X-Men Annual #9]

After Rachel returned from the Mojoverse and joined Excalibur, she openly wore her Hound outfit, apparently as a sign that she had overcome her troubled past. [Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn]
