Final Fantasy XII

Okay, as of last night I'm about 17 and a half hours in, and have just arrived at Raithwall's tomb. I had a bit of trouble getting across the Sandsea at first, and my first try at defeating Garuda was a complete and utter failure. So I went back and leveled up more and fought the Urutan Eater and, if this game was realistic, probably would have made the Urutan-Yensa extinct; got two 50 chains while leveling.

Second time I fought Garuda I had better weapons on Fran and Balthier so I just had them stand back and shoot while Penelo whacked it whenever it got close enough to the ground and kept the other healed.

Right now Vaan, Basch, and Ashe are level 16-17, and Penelo, Fran and Balthier are 14. Penelo I'm basically turning pure white mage and have switched her weapons from daggers to staves; Ashe knows a lot of white magic, and a decent bit of black, green, and arcane magic as well. I've more or less taught everyone first level white magic powers. And as is fairly obvious by the levels, I use Vaan, Basch, and Ashe the most. Vaan steals stuff and attacks, Basch tanks, and Ashe attacks and heals.

And as I'm me, I've been comparing it a lot to FFX...Vaan is a Tidus-clone, which is obvious simply by his appearance, but unlike Tidus, Vaan isn't an annoying whiny bastard. Ashe is very similar to Yuna, but actually has a spine and will think for herself. Fran is Lulu, again, obvious comparison. Penelo is very similar to Rikku in appearance, personality, and even how she does attacks. And Basch is Auron - the older character who is famous (for whatever reason), has a tragic/messy background and a connection with the two leads, and is guiding the younger heros.

But unlike FFX, where I couldn't stand Tidus or Yuna, I actually like Ashe and Vaan.

So yeah, that's where I'm at and my thoughts so far.

Haha, I committed mass genocide againt the Urutan Yensa too. I was there untill all my characters were level 20. Good times.

Haha, nice.

I'll probably spend some more time in there and level up Penelo, Fran, and Balthier before I go into the tomb.

There's an award given for linking 50

Mist Chains

Wow, that sounds ridiculously impossible.

So General, how far are you in the game, location wise, hour wise?

anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

just something that needs to be clear up.

so far the max mist chain , at least to my knowlegde, is 19

you get

Spoiler:
montblanc in the pirate's den
for reaching 50 chains, not 50 mist chain or hits. meaning you need to kill at least 50 monster of the same type or name to get that prize.

so far, there's no prize for getting a mist chain above 19 hits, other than, of course, an spectacular and powerful magic 🙂

Yeah, thanks for clearing that up. I realized I was mistaken.

Well last night I got to the city of

Spoiler:
Giruvegan
or however you spell it.

It took me a while to figure out how to get through the

Spoiler:
White Misty Part of the Feywood
to get there and then when I finally got to the
Spoiler:
door, it took me a while to figure out how to get it open

So I'm there. I beat the first boss and now I'm inside with all the monsters and stuff and I didn't die, but it took a lot of effort to beat these monsters who were like only 2-5 levels ahead of my characters. So I'm clearly not ready to proceed, so I'm going to go back to the

Spoiler:
Feywood
and level up when I get urge to.

I hate leveling up so I just hurried up and defeated the monsters that I was engaged with, which I actually had use

Spoiler:
Summons and Mist Attacks
to defeat and then I left and went to the Save Crystal and cut the game off. I just did not feel like leveling up and I still don't. Ugh.

Because of this and the fact that I may be getting a Nintendo Wii Sunday, I may not be playing Final Fantasy XII for a while.

I do have my top 3 characters equipped with the item that doubles their experience points though so that's good.

I also have my other 3 characters equipped with the item that doubles their License points.

I'm just now really filling out the Magick portion of the License Board.

It's true when it was said earlier that magic isn't really necessary in a lot of this game. And I hate that Disable and Immobolize misses A LOT. But yeah, I might as well get them all the magic now.

Does anyone know the purpose of the Magick FLOAT????? 🤨

So yeah...... Over my whole break I've only played Final Fantasy XII once and that wasn't my plan at all. I'm surprised.

I haven't really done a lot with the Techniques on the License Board. I'll work on those soon as well.

I did get Charge though. At first I was like, for the little amt. of magick that it restores, what's the point. But that little Magick that it does restore goes a long way, especially when you don't have any. Plus when you have a high Max MP, the little bar of Magick that comes up when you do use Charge, is actually more than what it looks like on the bar.

Have any of you been buying those 22,000 and + GILS Bazaar items that enable you to get

Spoiler:
rare items from monsters?

I have bought three and they've really been helpful in me getting a lot of money.

I have the

Spoiler:
Avion and Monster one.......the Insect one....and the one that says it's for Constructs......
I have no idea what that last one is. I figured maybe it meant Soldiers since you get no items from them when you fight then, but I don't, but since I have the money, I just bought it anyway. Because although I don't know what it is, I'm sure I'm fighting them, whatever they are and the more rare items the better.

I never did use the "Stea" Technique. I don't know why. I just didn't. I never thought to. The need never came to use it.

For those that did or still do use it, was/is it very useful?

Anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

I use Steal a bit (well, when I remember to) but I'm also still early in the game and desperate for gil so I can buy weapons. It's pretty useful, I'd say.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!

okay, this game is nuts. i finally finished it with my first line -basch penelo and asche at lvl 60 and the second line vaan balt and fran at lvl 51- this game was soooo good. has anyone gotten all the espers

Anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

Float, if i'm not mistaken it's used to... float over traps, mostly, don't know any other use 😕

charge is actually quite useful, didn't realize about it until recently. it helps alot, specially when fighting flans and the likes

the grimores

Spoiler:
those items that let you get or steal rare items
are very useful too. I used to "steal" all the time, I still do, it's just that now I can't steal all the time cuz my characters kill a moster before i can steal from them.
"steal" helps you alot when looting for gil. I have gambits set for both Fran and Vaan so they steal form the nearest enemy that has 100 % HP

there are very useful technicks in the board, take horology and traveler for instance, they can do alot of damage early in the game, and I expect it to be as useful later on.
I'm taking my sweet time with this game, i got 50 hours of gameplay, all chrctrs at lv 23+ and I'm only on my way to Raithwall's tomb 😄

Yeah, one or two of my characters have Horology and I don't think I've used it yet and I'm 50 something hours into the game as well but far beyond where you're at.

I need to remember to try some of the techniques that I haven't used yet so I can at least see what they do one time.

anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

You're 53 hours in and just entering Raithwall's tomb? Damn! I'm less than half that and already passed that.

I find that I very very rarely use techniks. I use Steal when I remember to, but that's about it. I don't have very many yet, though, I've been working on magic/augment/weapon licenses so far. I only bought licenses for my first Quickenings when I was in the tomb.

funny

Yeah, I didn't get some techniks until later in the game and still there are some I do not have. I'm just now working on getting all of the magick. For most of the game I've just had the basic magic so yeah, I'm working on that now. (Well when I play that is. Haven't been playing lately)

anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

I have licenses for up to...white magic 6 or 7, I think, and green magic 4 or 5...can't afford to actually buy the magic though ermm

Ha. yeah. that stinks.

I'm kind of the opposite.

I have a bunch of Magicks bought, but I don't have the licenses for them.

Have you bought any of the special Bazaar gear that allows you to steal very rare items from certain monsters? You get really good stuff, therefore getting lots of money.

Yeah the Bazaar item I'm referring to cost between 22,000--25,000, but they're worth it and the money you'll make will make up for it. I've made over 50,000 in one run.

I've bought all of those Special items so far. Which have been 3 thus far, don't know if they'll be anymore available. I don't waste anytime with the othe Bazaar items though.

anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

Not yet, I haven't even gotten them in the bazaar yet, I usually have little gil (I think the most I've had at any point is about 6,000) and that I usually spend on weapons and magicks.

I'm curious and I can't be bothered looking around the internet or even this thread...

What's the battle and magic system like in FFXII?

Battle/Magic System: You see a monster on the field. You either run up to it to engage in battle or go the opposite direction.

When you engage in battle you have this little timed bar that times when your next attack will be. The monster does as well. You can program characters to take automatic actions or you can do it manually yourself.

After you perform a Magick there's a little timed bar that stays up until you're free to attack again as opposed to after you attack, the time bar starts right back up again and then you attack. So when you do Magick, there's a longer down time, regular attacking has a shorter down time b/c right after your timed bar comes up after you've performed a Magick goes away you then have to wait for another little bar to time down until you can attack again.

If it sounds bad, it's not. Battle flow pretty nicely.

anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

By magic system, I meant how do characters learn it? Do they just gain magic as they level up or is it like materia or another system.

The idea of scrapping random battles in final fantasy is quite sad. I've grown to love them.

How you learn things is similar to the sphere grid in FFX, you have the license board, and you gain license points for defeating monsters. You use the points to buy magick, the ability to use better weapons/armor, etc. on the board. It's very easy, and most monsters give the same amount of LP, I've noticed, so if I need to get a lot quickly for a certain skill or something I just hang out in one of the easy areas where weak monsters spawn very quickly.

I was really wary on scrapping the random battles, but this way you can be careful about avoiding fights with enemies that are way too strong, and I've found that I actually go and seek fights out instead of grumbling everytime I get sucked into one.

Urgh, the sphere grid sucked balls. Bring back the Materia system is all I can say.

Random battles were awesome. It made sure that your party members were always at a decent level. If you pick and choose your fights I assume you have no idea what level you need to when fighting boses and such...
