Hey- I HATE the idea of "born bad." Born different, born difficult, born with a genotype that allowed for an adaptative phenotype that shows low emotional affect- OK? Born with a tendancy towards anti-social behavior. OK? Doesn't mean he couldn't have grown up to be CEO of a major corp, or a doctor, or a lawyer, you know, if his Mom had only decided to make lemonade when God gave her that precious little lemon, Clete.
I mean, they don't all become mass-murderers, even if they mostly become, at least privately, sick abusive F***S.
The concept of a child "born bad" is essential to the concept of Evil.
Are certain people evil, or are they just... dysfunctional? IMO the "dysfunctional" label is a total cop-out defanging the very concept of good vs. evil. Society nowadays would have you believe that there is no more Evil with a capital "E".... just people having a bad day. No one's at fault, they're just.... sorta...uh, sick. Murderers, alcoholics, mad bombers... they're *really* nice people deep down, but Mom just didn't raise 'em right. Right?
Bah! Was Judas Iscariot a guy who needed some quick cash, or was he damned from birth? What about Hitler? Stalin? The list goes on. Yes, circumstances molded these people. But why do the same circumstances not have the same effect on all who experience them?
Can it be that some people are just more naturally inclined to evil acts? I'll leave that for wiser minds than mine to unravel, but suffice it to say, I believe there's a strong possibility some people have that little extra...something... that makes it easier for them to act without conscience.
That's not Politically Correct these days, but observation bears it out.
Not every child born difficult, or who has to struggle to overcome adversity becomes a monster. But every now and then it happens.
If a child "manipulates" his own parents into destroying each other as Cletus did.... "Born with a tendancy towards anti-social behavior. OK?"
Is not anti-social behavior evil? If its not.... then what is?
