Linkalicious> But you CANNOT only talk and see America! Thats not the only country in the world...try and look arround as well, at other countries too.
Talking about America is possibly more interesting as out of all the contries that practice death penalty, as it certany is in a very interesting group...
We are discussing America because that's the country that holds the most important to us as Americans. Most of us don't give a damn if Belgium kills off their entire population with the Death Penalty. I don't think they should, but whatever. America holds a precedence in these conversations because that is what affects us the most.
WindDancer> But one particular individual doesn't matter much in the overall progress and evolution of a society. Sure, that "one" person won't kill again, but youve made the executioner a murderer. Does two wrongs make a right?
What do you mean, a "BIG chance"? I dunno abut prisons where you ae from, but fleeing prisoners are rare here in DK. Very rare.
So you support the death-penalty because of "over-crowding of prisoners"? Let's just KILL a lot of people, because there is no room for all the criminals?? How many people ARE on death-row? Or do you want to apply the death-penalty to more crimes (please look at the list Lil Bitchiness supplied. The US is right there with China, Iraq, Iran and North Korea)?
You either BUILD more prisons, OR - preferably - try to realise that crime doesn't appear out of nowhere. There are mentally ill people. No kind of punishment will ever work as a deterrent, they're sick. They should be in hospitals.
Then there are "sane" people committing crimes. WHY? What triggers this? Where and when does it happen? Can we change society to reduce the number of crimes? Are they related to poverty? To unemployment? To lack f education?
"What do you really accomplish by letting a mass murder serve a life time sentece?"
Justice.
Linkalicious> "Other countries give out capital punishment like parking tickets". Which countries? For what offences?
BingaBona> So a murder is a murder? You want to exeute soldiers?
Jeff Atello> There happens to be other people here than Americans. A comment like yours is why a lot of people around the world doesn't like Americans. And you have ZERO chance of influencing anything in the US, living there or not.
This is a thread about THE death-penalty in general. Since oher countries use it, it is not about "The American Death penalty". Or don't you have opinions on ANYTHING that doesn't happen in the US?

👆 Absolutely!
Hey, I know a thing that will reduce prison overcrowding! How about if drug users were treated as people with health problem rather than criminals?!
And yes, please check the list, and release in what group of countries America is in.
Im sorry, but how can some of you sit there and justify the death penalty, and the way people are killed?
Electric chairs? Lethal injections? Hanging? Shooting? Gas Chambers?!?!?!
Barbaric, inhumane is what that is. there is no justice in that! How native! Then again, refer to my list of countries practicing death penalty, i suppose it makes sense.
Finti> So in the cases where innocent people where sentenced to death, BY a judge, BY the system, there was NO evidence? Or… ?oh bloody hell even doctors mess up so what should we ban operations too

Lil B> But I CAN only talk about America when I am adressing another individual. Just because I was talking to someone else doesn't mean you have the right to tell me what i can and can't talk about. I mean this in no disrepect...but please mind your own business. When i feel the need to talk about another country...i will do so, and make it a general enough statement that you can read it, and rip it to shreds like you've done successfully with most people who are pro-capital punishment. I dunno how clear all of that was but my point is this. You're doing a great job arguing for anti-captial punishment...hell you've almost swayed my decision...keep up the good work!

Either you missed my point or I didn't make myself clear. I don't measure a thief and a murderer with the same ruler. We already talk earlier about the executioner and the job appointed to him by the state earlier (go back and read it if you would like)
What I meant to say with over-crowded prisons is that to keep thousands and thousands of murderers pack in a prison, is like having a "time bomb" ready to go off. Have you ever heard of the term "prison riots"? Yes, when that happens murderers team up to kill guards and escape prison.

I don't believe anybody has the right to take another man(or woman)'s life, be it legally or not. People deserve to be put in state prisonsfor life. Not federal, because those places are damn country clubs. Besides, life in prison is much, much worse than a little prick on the arm. Plus I'm a firm advocate in believing that most people are capable of change.
i know alot of people that are in state prison as i type and the fact is most of them dont mind alot of the times you will hear them say that its way easier then real live i mean they set you up with three hots meals aday a bed to sleep on and sometimes a job most of the you hear them crack jokes about geting to go home before they get cought
i actully have a few freinds that i grew up with that are in prison for murder i think they both deserve the death penalty for what they did
one of my friends decided he was broke one night and figured he would jack some one at the bank teller so he walked up to an old man and demanded his money the old man luaghed and told him to get a job well thats when he proceded to stab the oldman to death all over some money that came out to less the $20 dollers
the other guy was robbing houses in the middle of the night well in one of the houses their was a thirteen year old boy there so they woke him up and told him he better run as fast as he can when the boy was running he shot him in the back of the head i beleive they should both be killed for what they did
BingaBonga---Serving our country by being brainwashed and forced to kill...wow, what a great country!
Omega, how do I have no chance of changing anything? Are you a complete imbecile as to how the courts or the justice system work? I DO have the potential to make something happen.
To say that comments like the ones I made are what make people hate Americans is-simply put-ludicrous. People hate Americans because of our tendency to look down on weaker nations and our tendency to stick our noses where they don't belong. What goes on in Belgium has nothing to do with me. What goes on in America does, however, and most people will agree, American or not, that what goes on here can directly affect what happens in their countries.
Not if you're drafted! What then? We're considered "unamerican" if we dodge the draft. But what about those of us who are consciencious objectors? I hate war and I hate the military because they brainwash people and turn them into mindless killing machines. If they are fighting a war for me, I will support them because I don't want to see anybody die, but I will protest the war at the same time.
I just hope everyone is willing to agree that
SOME people have earned the right to die for their crimes...
I'm not agreeing with captial punishment and i'm not in favor of murder or any sort of hate crime...But i honestly feel that SOME people have earned the right to die for their crimes...(extreme emphasis on SOME)

And while this may seem a bit contradictory, I think some murders are excusable. say, for instance, that two drunk men brutally rape your 10 year old daughter, and leave her for dead. If you take it upon yourself to kill them, I believe that should be excused. Hell, it shouldn't even go to trial. There are extreme circumstances in which you can break the law and should be allowed to get away with it.
I agree with that very much. I am firmly against the death penalty, but I do believe that some people deserve to die for what they have done. I just don't think it should be up to the state or the federal government to decide that. Granted, we can't have people running around and just killing people for no good reason, but we can't have the government intervening and deciding that somebody needs to die.
But who's to say that what you did was wrong, the state? No. Maybe you had a legitimate reason to do what you did. Unless it's raping somebody, then it's just ridiculous. I believe killing anybody is wrong, even if it is the state that does it. Keep them in jail, and all our troubles will be cured. It costs less to keep them in jail than to give them a lethal injection, anyway.
