Hmmmm I was curious about the statue and manage to get a screen capture from abc.com. The statue looks like a woman and it seems to be wearing a sweater/pants clothes. Also, its holding something in both hands. The pic looked better when I captured it in HD.
I really hope the show's storyline doesn't tweak history so that the Ancient Egyptians somehow had a colony in the South Pacific. That would just be stupid.

I hope they make it were either the island was once part of that region, but became separated, or it was an island that had the same culture and traditions.
Richard Alpert could very well be one of the first ever on the island. Maybe even an ancient being. Like Juliet said, "he's always been here". If you know about Egyptian mythology, the the name "Ra" will sound familiar to you. R.A. are also Richard initials.

I'm starting to think about the reason why the statue broke...did the Island move and create enough stress that it just broke apart? Did someone come and knock it down? Or is its destruction symbolism for something?

When I first saw it I also though it was Horus, and it does go along with Horace. Anubis has long pointy hears, so he's pretty much out
... but Horus doesn't have ears, so it can be him either
there's another one, a goddess that does fit the image shown in the show (conveniently showing it only its back) "Tueris"
look at this images
Horus and Anubis are both represented holding an Ankh in one hand and a staff on the other, the statue in the show has both hands down holding what appears to be Ankhs
Tueris has both hands down resting on some "short canes", for lack of a better word, that resemble Ankhs.
Tueris is the goddess of Fertility, a big theme in the show, her face (and head) is that of and Hippopotamus (the short ears seen in the show's statue) and the tail of a cocodrile (some representations have the tail where it should be, others have the tail coming out of her headdress), she also has large breasts and big tummy, much like a pregnant woman (again with pregnancy). she has a round "crown" on her head that resembles the one seen in the statue (first pic), Horus has a circular ring ("sun disk" )surrounded by wings, which cannot be seen in the show's statue...
and Tueris is represented having lion's feet.... in other words, 4 toes...
Richard Alpert also looks egyptian, with the eyeliner and such 😛
Mairuzu: damn you and your teasing sig!
Taweret? I thought about her, what with the whole pregnant issue and the Island not granting the birth of children conceived on the island, but I threw her out for a few reasons. First, she is the concubine of evil, Apep, and the island is supposedly good, so I doubt they would have a statue dedicated to her. Secondly, she is relatively unknown outside of those people interested in Egyptian myth, and so far, Lost has been able to be figured out by normal people, I don't think the producers would throw in such an unknown deity from ancient Egypt.
But, over all, that is a good theory and I agree with all of your reasons, and quite honestly, other than what I have already said, I can't find a solid defense against the theory. Except, of course, that those pointy things on the top of the statue aren't necessarily ears, they could be connected to the headpiece or something. Good theory.

Hmmm didnt knew about that one. It makes a lot of sense. Maybe the "curse" of women not able to have children began when the statue was destroyed.

So the Ancient Egyptians discovered a portal and used it to transport monoliths? Sounds like you're trying to apply Stargate's storyline to Lost.

what if the original inhabitants of the island were egyptian... it's not necessary for them to use or transport anything, just maybe built it there or something...

Originally posted by Quiero MotaOr, you know, they could have just built it on the island...don't really know where you got the transporting the statue to the island. But, anyway, that's not what I meant: I said the inhabitants of the island could practice or believe in the egyptian religion, but not necessarily be egyptian.
