well gollum is still one of my favorite characters, but not because of how cute he is or anything....in his real story, as Tolkein wrote it, that is, he not only kills his best friend, Deagol, to get the Ring, he then decides it's the thing to do going around with it on, so he can hear peoples' secrets, then blackmail them with them...it's what gets him tossed out of his grandmother's hole in the first place. And even before he got the Ring, he "...was interested in roots and beginnings; he dived into deep pools; he burrowed into green moundd; and he ceased to look up at the hill-tops, or the leaves on the trees, or the flowers opening in the air: his head and his eyes were downward."
