ok so does anyone know gollums last name?? does anyone know where he used to live before he was taken over by the ring???
You'll find out more in The Return of the King, in case you haven't already seen it. It sounds as if you haven't, though. But why does he have 2 names? Is it really Gollum, or Smeagol? It sounds like Gollum is supposed to be his bad half, and the good half is Smeagol. I think he was "one of the river folk...", like Frodo said in The Two Towers.

As far as I could remember...nowhere it was written if Smeagol has a last name or no..he's just simply called Smeagol before the Ring came to him.
Smeagol was one of the Stoors..a type of Hobbit who enjoys living near the riverbanks and such. He (as well as Deagol and his other kin) lived on the banks of the Great River Anduin in the late Third Age. When he killed Deagol because of the Ring..he even managed to go back to his village but when they knew that he was the one who murdered Deagol...they "cursed him and drove him away" (just like in the movie "They cursed us and drove us away!"..then he fled alone to the Misty Mountains until the Ring thoroughly poisoned his mind and he gradually transformed into the ugly nasty Gollum.

Smeagol was his original Hobbit name. When he was still young and innocent..not yet involved with the One Ring and all that.
Gollum came from the guttural swallowing noises that he was creating when the Ring came to him. (Like in the movie..he was always coughing and saying *gollum*..*gollum*)...I think that *gollum* sound started when his "Gollum alter ego" (as in his bad side) was already starting to show its presence. I also think that it's kinda sort of a mirroring image of when he was strangling Deagol. But yeah..eventually, Smeagol or Slinker is the good side..Gollum or Stinker is the bad side.

yea i have seen and read the retrun of the king but i was just curious about this kind of thing, like how i asked one of my friends once if hobbits had middle names. i ask weird things like that
ok gollum freaks of the world...did u like him better in the books or in the movies? did he become more understandable in the movies? what did he look like to u when u read the books? compare him to a person or animal if u can...
for me i liked his personality better in the movies. to tell yall the truth merry was my favorite in the books. for me when i read the books it was kind of ruined by the cartoon version of the hobbit. he looked like a toad. i guess i could compare his appearance to my recent great grandma... just the wrinkle part though.
