You creepy little stalker
Lord Of The Rings did have character development, I have to admit.
Gimli and Legolas becoming best friends despite their differences. Frodo having the strength but not enough to destroy the ring. Boromir's and Faramir's characters are reinforced with each other. Pip and Merry becoming completely unlikely heroes (LOTR's very own Ewoks on Endor), and Sam becoming a brother almost to Frodo. There's also the screwed up Gollum of course.
When you look at it like this, it's amazing how similar LOTR and Star Wars really are.
R2D2 and C3PO are like Merry and Pip - two completely out of their depth heroes that observe the action around them that is greater than them, and yet they get involved and play a huge part, and are also the comic relief double act that everyone loves.
Darth Vader is like the old king (cant remmeber his name - dude defetated Sauron ages ago) but fell to the dark side. His heir has to pick up the pieces. Sauron is the pure evil like teh Emporor.
Luke Skywalker is a lot like Aragorn crossed with Frodo. He's like Frodo, because he's constantly battling "the dark side", and he develops like Aragorn, from an outsider to realise his destiny, and is also the heir to a legacy himself.
Then you've got Legolas and Gimli, who are obviously the cool sidekicks that resemble Han Solo and Chewbacca. Constantly bickerring and talking to themselves and forming a solid friendship with each other. Han and Chewies relationship also resembles Frodo and Sams.
Han is also a lot like Aragorn aswell, he has the love interest, of a Princess no less, very simlar to LOTR's angelic love interests. The girls also provide excellent arse-kickery when the going gets tough.
Of course, they are different too. We didn't see Aragorn and Eowyn (sp?) arguing all the time like Han and Leia for instance, but on a personal level, they are similar movies. What sets them apart is that personally for me, Star Wars does it with more style and charm.
