THERE IS NO comparisons you retards
They are two different types of movies( yeah still fantasy though)
ITs unfair to compare box office earning, cause SW original receipts were from a time of lower ticket prices and lass cinemas. Honestly if the Original SW series had come out now( 4-6, and of course with today's tech) LOTR would be nothing in the box office scale.
Different people with different tastes would like either one OR BOTH( as i do).
I will just compare Star Wars OT vs. Lord of the Rings. I am not counting the prequels because they're not finished yet.
1. A New Hope vs. Fellowship of the Ring
Winner: Star Wars: A New Hope
2. Empire Strikes Back vs. Two Towers
Winner: Star Wars: Empire Stikes Back
3. Return of The Jedi vs. Return of The King
Winner: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
A New Hope changed movies forever, and will always be a classic when you review the history of movies
Empire Strikes Back is probably, next to Godfather II, the best sequel ever made.
Return of the Jedi was a weak installment, Return of the King is a much better movie, has a great ending(s) , and really completes the trilogy well. Plus it won, I believe, 11 Academy Awards!
Overall, while they're both great trilogies, I would have to give the edge to Star Wars.

You cant say that either because if SW came out today it wouldnt have that big of an impact just because it wouldnt be all that new when comared to Star Trek and other type Space movies... SW was so popular because "at the time" it was something noone had ever seen before... And yes its true ticket prices and number of theatres were less back then ill give that to SW, but like i said Star Wars didnt really have any other movies to compete against in its genre... LOTR on the other hand has to compete against every history, Sci- fi, and Fantasy piece ever made and still one all the awards, got all that praise, and made all that money. Can you imagine if LOTR had been made in 1978, it would have far surpassed what SW did, grant it they would not of had all that tech to show the large scales of the battles and all, but then again look at what SW is doing with the new tech, ruining a classic! LOTR was by far more critically aclaimed than SW and the more SW movies that come out the worst its getting for them IMO... Although i do think Revenge of the Sith is going to be Epic! Im a fan of both, and i love SW especially the first trilogy, but LOTR at least for me has more substance and is a deeper and more meaniful story that SW.
But yes you are right two different movies and both are great in their own respect
