I don't like the toys being humans. The One Piece world is way cooler if there was just an island of sentient toys for no reason.

Dude, I think its obvious that they're being made to forget somehow. Toy Soldier asked the boy if he had a father and he said no. You can't naturally forget that you have a dad.

You're right that it was better having sentient toys just because its One Piece but I'd rather deal with **** moms and kids then the Fodder vs Fodder tournament that's going on.

Least now I have something I can pretend to give a shit about.

Oh and I'll just give the story the benefit of the doubt and guess that the side effect of being turned into a toy makes everyone forget you were a human or some shit like that

I...honestly just assumed Doflamingo had him turned into a toy while his wife was pregnant or when he was a baby.

No, but subverting typical expectations and going an unexpectedly darker route from our expectations while staying within the confines of the setting is good writing.

As it stands perhaps it will be fine so long as there is a good reason for Doflamingo turning his citizens into toys. Only time will tell.
