I would love to see smoking banned in all public places.
This is happening in pubs and clubs all over the country, but it isn't happening in all public places.
I would like to see workers banned from taking a 'smoko' 2-3 times a day. There is no need to go outside, and have a ciggarette eithor before or after your lunch break.
I would like to see tougher smoking laws in all public places-the MCG for example, bus/tram/train stops, outside workplaces/hospitals.
This might sound a little harsh, but I strongly believe that a persons right to maintain good health far outweighs the right for people to chose to be unhealthy.
There needs to be tougher anti-smoking laws-at the moment, the commercials we see on television are having effect, nor is the printing of graphic images on ciggarette packets. Shop owners are simply turning these packs over so as not to offend their customers.
So what more can we do to deter people-young people especially-from taking up this habit?
I believe in banning smoking in films. Reason being, young people are more likely to take up a habit such a smoking if they see their favourite actor/actress/singer doing it.
Celebrities have so much power these days-they could use some of that power to reach out to the youth of today, their fans, and dissuade them from smoking.
Schools could also do so much-why can't teenagers see what effect smoking has on them by learning this in science class?
Parents are also an influence. Studies have shown that young people are nearly twice as likely to take up smoking if one or both parents smoke. Of course, we can't remove children from their parents just because they smoke, as smoking is not a crime-so what can be done?
I'd like to know the reason for people taking up smoking in the first place-is it because their friends smoke? Is it because it's 'cool'? Is it because they are trying to impress? Is it because their parents smoke, or a favourite celebrity smokes?
I think if we knew some of the reasons why people take up smoking in the first place, we would be better able to tackle this problem.
