I found the painting and I found the paint brushes and stuff in the mage's desk.
That's all I've found. I've been in every other room and I've found nothing.
I was sure I'd find something in the Queen's big room.
I've even picked up some books in hope of finding some information written in them.
I even picked up balls of crumpled up paper in hopes that they were notes, but they were just trash and I'm still carrying them around.
I tried accusing people, but it says I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE.
So yeah. I've went through like 5 times already. I even waited down there with the painting hoping somebody would come down eventually. No luck.

Lemme see, long time since I did this quest.
Have u found the secret passageway somewhere? There's a torch/lever at the wall not far from the queens room which opens a hidden path if I remember correctly. Or that was one other castle.
Anyway I remember finding a room with a painting in it and had to examine some footprints or something on the ground.
However it has been ages since I did this and stuff seems to mix together when I think back on it.
Theres the footprints in the dinning room. Then theres the secret room with the painting and paint brush. and lastly theres the confession from the woman. You have to talk to everyone in the castle in order to get this done. Once you have found all the clues go to the woman and get a confession from her.

man do the brotherhood, illest quests in the game by far.
and spidervlad, do you have to go to each city for a different quest? like for every city theres one thieves quest just like the mages guild in the beginning or is it all random and you can do them all in the imperial city?
and another thing, my dark brotherhood horse died, where do i go to get it back?
