You're right; DC & Warners totally expected a lot more. Hence another protracted reboot situation. Meanwhile, an unknown (outside of comic circles) hero named Iron Man totally took off in 2008, making Superman look old & rusty.
Marvel Studios knows what they're doing. Heck, even Green Lantern looks poised to supplant Superman movies.

except it won't.
no franchise at DC will ever make more money than Supes or Bats.
GL might do well, but another Superman movie is already being worked on.
Actually Ironman 2 has made more than Ironman 1 world wide just not domestically. Maybe it's different in the states but a movie ticket costs the same price now as it did in 2008, $10.25... at least at the theater closest to me.
Nothing I've seen from the GL production looks anything close to "good." Right now wouldn't be surprised if tanks.

Iron Man 2 was less successfull than Iron Man, even with higher ticket prices. His mystique is going down. The point was that even a bad Superman movie can make 200 million is impressive considering a good Iron Man movie can make 300.Even Wolverine and Hulk movies failed to top Superman Returns.
The film did fairly well critically. It was audiences who were more mixed.
Considering the $200+ million Warners sunk into it, they were hoping for a minimum of $500 million worldwide; they just barely got $400 million. The only Marvel movies to cost that much were Spider Man 2 & 3, which did $800 & $900 million, respectfully.

Iron Man 2 had a wider realease than Iron Man.
Iron Man also had someone else portray Rhodey/War machine as well..
