Thor's most likely going to end up with a world wide total of $450 million, more or less.Inflation goes both ways by the way. Superman Returns would probably have a production cost of like what, $300 million today?
Thor cost around half as much to make and will gross a total almost on par with Superman Returns. It doesn't exactly come off looking negatively in the comparison.
I think that a Thor sequel if handled and marketed well could end up being a huge block buster. By that time, a great deal of people who never considered to watch Thor will have, and would most likely enjoy it. I don't think Thor ever clicked with the most profitable audience, the "teenage" crowd, because most of them never considered to watch Thor. This is based on my experience of course.
And let's face it Superman Returns was crap while Thor was awesome. I'd be willing to bet that a Superman movie with some descent action and fight scenes would make big money.

Everyone knows who Superman is. A good Superman movie would make a lot of money. That was never being contested.

No. What counts is how much money you spent on the film, and how big your profit margin is from what it grosses and nets in various sales. Thor cost less to produce than Superman Returns, and has grossed not just more than proportional to it's budget, but more overall. And the story was more successful; didn't have fans afterwards talking about reboots.
You think any executive in Hollywood trumpets number of tickets sold? They don't give a crap about stats like that. What they care about is dollar figures, what the film has brought in greenbacks. That's the kind of publicity they talk about and advertise.

It's nice that Branagh is staying as a producer. I hope this isn't more of Marvel's strongarming behind the scenes...
I don't know who they would go get now. I think Matthew Vaughn would be involved in more X-Men at this point than going back to work on Thor. Someone who would continue the style Branagh created...
Off topic, if they ever brought in Amora the Enchantress, what do people think of someone like Aly Michalka playing her?
