From two greek words meaning "good death". We do this to animals who have terminal conditions or who are in severe pain so I see no reason a person who is of sound mind and has a terminal illness, or who can't even go to the bathroom without another persons help shouldn't be allowed to request a doctor euthanize them. I do believe there are or at least were, laws on the books in Washington and Oregon allowing this but I'm unsure of their current status.
If I have, say, starge 4 colon cancer and even the morpine isn't helping the pain anymore then I want to be put out of my misery.

It is quite interesting that we don't want animals to suffer, but we'll force people to continue on in pain until their bodies finally give out. Compounding it is the costs of the extraordinary efforts necessary to keep people alive and to maintain their care in those situations. Stranger still is that if you have a living will you can opt to be removed from life support if you're in a vegetative state, but if you're coherent you're SOL and have to live on no matter what your condition.
