Jokes about Minorities...

If it pertains to one's own race it wouldn't be a big deal for me...

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not racist. Which is exactly the point.

If you hear me say anything like that, it's never meant with any kind of malice. Sure, it's a racial term but if there's no meaning behind saying it, then what is there to be offended by? I mean, how in your mind can you think "I know for a fact he/she doesn't mean that badly, at all." and still be offended?

Even still some people say "ALL black people like chicken, duh", when they aren't black. I laugh at it, now if they say, "how long does it take a black person to shit... 9 months" I'm sure many of my friends wouldn't like that, though I'm a BIT more open minded.

racism is horrible if someone is racist they are insecure or just plain stupid. if someone came up to a guy with a beard and had a go at him about that everyone would laugh. but if someone came up to a guy who was black and had a go at him about that they would be offended. and no one would laugh. racism is silly and anyone who participates doesnt understand the meaning of the word nice.

but racism does not stop at words. Birmingham is a prime example of that. An English channel did a documentary on it, very racist, full of abuse against them

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Birmingham doesn't contain a distinct race.

nor does any place populated by humans when you think scientifically. 😛
agreed though, perhaps 'bigoted' 'eletist' or 'prejudice' would have been better words to use.

Yeah, you bastard. I knew someone would point that out but I couldn't be bothered to alter the phrasing.

I meant Birmingham isn't a race.

I don't really think 'intent' is the key element though, it's perception.

I find it hypocritical when people say racism is wrong but then laugh/tell racist jokes.
And people keep saying "jokes are just jokes" but they aren't just jokes, you are making fun of how other people are different compared to you.
"Words are just words" < now THAT is the most idiotic comment in this thread, Hitler was just talk at first and we all know what happened then.

Bottom line, racist jokes are not funny in anyway, not even when a coloured person tells it and anyone who says racism is wrong and then tells racist jokes is a hypocrite.

Yeah. I suppose the problem is people are now saying 'racist jokes', rather than 'jokes about minorities'. A racist joke is... *drumroll* racist.

The subject doesn't even need to be 'minority' jokes, but simply racial jokes.

Jokes about black/hispanic/asian/middle-eastern people are just as offensive as jokes about minorities.

Not quite sure what point you are making there.

You said the problem of the thread is that now people are saying "racist jokes" instead of "minority groups jokes"
Both of the two kinds of jokes are equally offensive. It doesn't matter how we call them the point is the same, they're not funny... they're offensive.

The distinction I was making is between jokes that are racist, and jokes that are about races, while not necessarily being 'racist'.

Jokes about races but are not racist... can't really imagine how one like that would go.

i dont mind racial jokes, so long as they are not demeaning toward anyone.

i think if americans claim to live in a culture which celebrates diversity, we should be able to find humor in such differences.

granted, some of it gets really old. it seems too many talented comedians allow their acts to be overshadowed by racial jokes. example: "white people blah blah blah, but black people blah blah blah". yeah, its cool to laugh at white people, so long as your willing to share the butt of the joke, but at the same time it gets boring when thats the whole shtick and nothing more.

i also wish white comedians were free to joke in the same manner, but such is the dark side of PC: double standards

:edit: to answer the previous question, as i alluded to, a racial joke which is not racist is one where the butt of the joke is shared, and doesnt focus on negative steriotypes, but rather very common traits within ethnicities/cultures.

Seems pretty staged to me.

Of course they're staged. That's the point. My favorite is when he picks up all the latino day labourers and tells them he needs them for work on his deck. Then he takes them to the immigration office.

I also like the one where he's dresssed as a member of the KKK, and asks black guys if he can borrow some gasoline.
