You guys think this tital wave is bad? There was a special on the Discovery Channel showing the devastation of what happens when a mountain side gives way. Across the sea there is a mountain (forgot the name or locaation)Its on the canary islands outside the west coast of africa. And since we live NOW why worri about what might happen sometime in the distant future, and it will hit Africa just as bad as the US
Mega tsunamis depend on the amount of earth displaced as well as the gradient of the underwater land of the land approached. God forbid it ever happens.
This disaster has scared me, not only cause of the magnitude of devastation ensued but also because i recognised some places i had been staying at in Thailand (Phuket & Ko Phi Phi). Nonetheless it brings toughts to mind on the consequences these mighty forces of nature may have on islands.
I think this reminds the west we may get hit by waves. If a tidal wave hits the east coasts. all i can say it would cause so much death and destrutction it may put that country on its knees. Hundrends of thousnads dead for sure, look at miami, new york!!! hundrends of billions in damages. All we hope for that it dosen't happen.
Thailand is a odd place. Some reports of everything going well. However according to this its going to get much worse there. I think the Thia's are trying to make everything look normal so they won't lose tourist dollars. But i have seen on CBC in Kaho Lak at lest 1000 people have been found dead alone. 1000 Germans are feared dead according to the German leader.
Here some news
The official toll in Thailand is 1,600, but 3,500 foreigners were unaccounted for, including more than 2,000 Scandinavians.
More than 1,800 bodies have been recovered from Khao Lak beach, north of Phuket island, and more than 3,000 people may have died there alone, police said. More than 300 dead had been found on Phi Phi island, made famous in the film "The Beach."
Bloated and decaying bodies continued to wash ashore on the island as hopes of finding survivors amid the rubble of hotels and shops faded slowly.
"It's hard to tell which bodies are foreign because they are just unrecognizable," said French rescue volunteer Serge Barros.
Hundreds of people were killed in the Maldives, Myanmar and Malaysia. The wave struck as far away as Somalia and Kenya.
Schroeder said up to 1,000 Germans could be dead.
The region has seen huge killer waves before, including one when Krakatoa erupted off southern Sumatra in 1883, but Indian Ocean countries have no tsunami warning system.
Images of the nightlife being resumed already were shown on the news over here
Well the Thia's are desperate to get everything back to normal.60% of all tourism happens in Pukhet!!! Don't be fooled, i am sure it is still a disaster scene. Well 15 of my fellow Canadians have been found dead and as many as 70 are confirmed missing.
Lol one yank thinks Japan is a state of China. he was taking about China not giving so much aid, but one of their state's Japan is!! Lol
However Japan is kind to give 30 million dollars. I hate that my country Canada which calls itself the most tolerant of nations only gave 4.2 million even though we have a 10 billion dollar surplus. If i were Prime Minister i would have gave 100 million. Also this would force the US and everyone to give even more. I think we will give more, the people are quite mad at the PM now.
America says it gave 2.5 billion in aid last year. I thank we gave over 500 million and we are 10 times smaller!!!! I think the US should give more if it wants a chance to look better in th world. Us gives the most in dollar amounts but by per captia they are the worst @!!!
I think were going to give way more money soon. I hope. I think 25 million from us is a very good donatation.
Amazing INdia giving 23 million in aid even though some of thier coastlines are islands are destroyed. Shame on the US!!!~!
Swedish and German deaths soaring
By Connie Levett, Herald Correspondent in Phuket
December 30, 2004
More than 1000 Swedes and Germans are missing, feared dead, as the death toll in Thailand continues to mount.
One Swedish tour company, Fritidsresor, has 600 people it cannot account for. Another, MyTravel, has 297 Swedes missing, according to Swedish newspaper reports.
Hundreds of German tourists are also missing.
The devastated Khao Lak area, 90 minutes north of Phuket, had a strong representation of both nationalities.
Many of the resorts were old-style bungalows on the beach that were crushed by the force of the tsunami.
There were no bungalows left standing when the Herald visited the beach on Tuesday.
"We have 10 confirmed dead," said Peter Finger, the press spokesman for the German embassy. "But frankly we believe it will go much higher. We have a hot spot in Khao Lak where we have a lot of Germans missing. It could be anything from 80 to 600. I fear we will have very bad news in the next few days."
There were 4500 Germans holidaying in the affected region when the tsunami struck. There were 10,000 to 15,000 Swedes.
