Thought "Oldboy" was OK. It came recommended, and I felt it was a little overhyped. Some fun "Fight Club" like cinematography, and a harsh storyline, but nothing that impressive, IMO. Hardly any revenge involved for a supposed gem of the genre.
Watched:
RENT - I got 10 minutes into it and couldn't take anymore.
Edward Scissorhands - Seemed really flat, didn't care for it at all.
Oldboy gets better with every viewing. One of the few relevant twists in film, and right up there with Se7en and Psycho as the best twists in the history of film. Mindblowing not because ithe twist is simply surprising and catches you off gaurd (Fight Club, Sixth Sense), but because of the choices that is made from the character after the shocking realization, and its relevance to the theme and message of the film.
Another thing that made it so good was that it rose above it's apparant subgenre and became something much more complex and much more meaningful. You go in expecting a generic revenge movie and get a film with very deep thoughts and messages about humanity.
