Hey, C-Dic, just outta curiosity I've never gotten around to watching "A History of Violence" (dont ask why, I dont know either) but I do remember you saying that it was not all that good and severely overhyped (you did, didnt you?). Is it worth a rent? Any comments?
Yyyyyeah, I tried to watch it again, and it still didn't work. It's my least favorite Cronenberg movie, and that's behind "Rabid" even. Just too convoluted and messy to make sense of, IMO. Good story, bad execution. I would suggest renting it though, just to form an opinion.
WATCHED:
ATHF Vol. 4
RENTED:
Night of the Hunter
Spellbound (Hitchcock)
The Omega Code
Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis. It began really slow, considering the first three didn't waste time and got into the zombies right away. I was pissed that the zombies were able to die by being shot in the head. Other than that, the gore was great, there were a few laughs, and it was enjoyable. It's the worst ROTLD so far though. They did a callback to the first one when the zombie called for more security guards (the first called for ambulances) which I cracked up at.
Hostel. I have mixed feelings. Sometimes the gore was nice. Sometimes it was shown too long, making it look fake. And I didn't like the teasing in some scenes, cutting away before we see something get severed or whatever. A lot of the scenes were very cheesy and too convenient. So minus the few good gores, eh.

Watched "Hostel", with Roth/Tarantino commentary. I've come to the conclusion that the first half is garbage, but the second half was great. I've kind of warmed up to it, but don't know that I'll ever own it.

The second half wasn't that great either. The gang of kids was really unnecessary and there were a bunch of lucky conveniences that helped the guy escape. And IMO, even the most shallow person in the world wouldn't have jumped in front of a train because her face was burned. There would be some grief time, crying, then possibly slit her wrist days later.
The kids were ruthless, and got paid off in candy to knock off the "bad guys", so to speak. They were lurking through the whole movie, and I thought it was pretty balls out and funny.
Horror movies are ALWAYS full of inconveniences and conveniences. Nobody should ever question them, nor take them seriously.
