No 'Q' For Bond 21?

John Cleese says his character Q has been removed from the next James Bond movie Casino Royale. "If I'm told that is there is a Q, I will be Q. But unfortunately, I don't believe there's a Q in the current version of the script," Cleese told Ananova.

Director Martin Campbell is said to have dropped the character because he believes his plans for a serious Bond movie would be undermined by Cleese's humorous inventor role.

"Casino Royale will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie," Campbell told IOL. "We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects and comic relief."

lau, I read it on kmc too... but that's the EXACT same thing he said way back in November
and Campbells quote is from January so I'm very doubtful if Cleese actually said this a few days ago or not

Just as Lois Maxwell will be forever Miss Moneypenny so too will Desmond be Q. I think technology has become so far advanced that anything a modern Q could come up with just wouldn't impress today's audiences. I think the character should be put to rest just like the great man himself! 🙁

no, they have to keep him, it's a recognisable character so they have to keep up with tradition

though if they indeed do go back to Bond's roots, there won't be a Q in it if he's not in the secret service yet

"TRADITION is for tombstones, baby!" And I'm not taking the piss here! DR NO had no Q and is regarded by many as the best Bond of the lot!

OK, so if they MUST have a Q at least let him not be a clown like John Cleese. Desmond had a dry wit, not the in your face stupidity of John. The guy dosen't even look the part!

To be fair to the legendary John Cleese, he had some pretty big shoes to fill when it came to the role of Q; there aren't many people who could successfully take over from Desmond Llewellyn, and even though he perhaps wasn't the most obvious replacement, I actually thought that he improved immensely between "TWINE" and "DAD" ...

but i don't like him 😬

perhaps the problem lies that in DaD he had the impossible task to "promote" the Vanishi?

To be fair, though, I thought that he was MUCH better in "DAD" than in "TWINE" {due to him being given better lines, and due to the fact that he didn't have the legendary Desmond Llewellyn to act against}. He at least had a few cool quips:

Bond: Huh - you know, you're cleverer than you look.

Q: Still, better than looking cleverer than you are ...

Madonna has made a life long career of looking stupider than she really is! She's one clever gal IMO! 😮‍💨 She's reinvented herself more times than different actors have played Bond!
