Just watched Cronenberg's SHIVERS. 1975.
An parasitic infection apocalypse film. Not bad. Most will find it dated.
It's pretty much up their with Rabid. Who's theme was also sex.
A good look at the eras response to such an outbreak. People then seemed to have no knowledge on the idea of such a threat so the heroes kind of aimlessly wonder around hoping human decency and the authorities would take care of the problem. To no avail.
If a remake was to be made under the same circumstances things would've gone very differently.
I guess the theme of the film was the early fear of STDs consuming mankind. AIDS had just started to make it's way out of Africa and had intitial cases in the US around 68. So no doubt this film looked at the act of sex as becoming the source of mans eventual downfall.
Where George Romero used sociological fears as metophors for his zombie and outbreak films Cronenberg similarly used the same inspirations but more intensely.
Cronenberg rocks. Nice to see Barbara Steele in a role for the first time as well.
6/10.
I mean, I know it was a TV series too. I think they're both based on the same Stephen King story.
Yeah, Cronenberg's subject matter isn't necessarily almost my cup of tea, but he's definitely one of the best directors of all time.
Definitely check out The Dead Zone if you're on a Cronenberg kick. It's also got a good performance from Martin Sheen.
I watch last night "The HOBBIT"
